Bernadette Mary Allen (born June 5, 1955 in Washington, DC ) is an American diplomat .

Life

Bernadette Allen grew up in Seat Pleasant , Maryland . She attended the Central College in Pella , spent a year abroad at the Sorbonne in France and completed her education in Pella in 1978 with a bachelor's degree in French civilization and language.

Allen joined the United States Department of State's diplomatic service in 1980 . She worked as a vice consul at the US embassy in Bujumbura and as a consul at the US embassy in Manila and, for half a year, at the US consulate in Fukuoka . From 1985 she worked in various managerial positions in the State Department in Washington, DC During that time she studied Human Resource Management at George Washington University , where she obtained a master’s degree in 1989 . She also completed training in standard Chinese .

From 1991 to 1994, Bernadette Allen served as the Consular Section Head of the United States Consulate General in Guangzhou . As a result of the Tian'anmen massacre in 1989, her department was busy processing applications from hundreds of Chinese citizens who wanted to join family members in the United States who had been granted temporary protection status there. From 1994 to 2000 Allen was again at the State Department in Washington, DC, most recently as director of the department for visa coordination.

She then worked at the US Consulate General in Montreal , initially heading the consular department until she was Consul General herself from 2002 to 2005. She made a particular effort to establish contacts with the Haitian and Muslim minorities in Montreal. Allen became the United States Ambassador to Niger in 2006 . She held this office until 2010.
