Bernard Ładysz (born July 24, 1922 in Vilnius ; † July 25, 2020 in Warsaw ) was a Polish opera singer ( bass baritone ), actor and former soldier.

Life

Ładysz began his vocal studies in 1940 in Vilnius. He became a sergeant of the Polish Home Army , took part in the " Aktion Burza " (thunderstorm) in 1944 and was arrested by the NKVD after the Red Army took Vilna and imprisoned in the Soviet Union , in Kaluga , from 1944 to 1946 . Ładysz returned to Poland in 1946 and continued his vocal studies at the Warsaw Conservatory , which had been interrupted since 1941 . First he was active in the song and dance ensemble of the Polish Army, 1950–1979 he was a soloist in the Warsaw Opera Theater .

In 1956 he received the first prize "Il primo premio assoluto" in the singing competition in Vercelli . Then he was engaged by the Teatro Massimo in Palermo . Successes followed worldwide - from Australia , North and South America to the People's Republic of China . For Columbia Records he sang with Maria Callas in the complete recording of Gaetano Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor under Tullio Serafin , as well as a record with opera arias by Giuseppe Verdi and Russian composers.

As an opera singer he appeared in the title roles of Eugene Onegin , Das Gespensterschloss , Halka , Faust , Barber of Seville , Don Giovanni , Don Carlos , The Sicilian Vespers , The Power of Fate , Aida , Rigoletto , Prince Igor , Boris Godunow and Jolanthe .

He also appeared at the world premieres of Krzysztof Penderecki's works The Devils of Loudun and the St. Luke Passion . He also worked in the entertainment repertoire, including Anatevka . He played the title role in the sound and film recordings of Domenico Cimarosa's buffo opera Il maestro di cappella .

Bernard Ładysz was also successful as a film actor. Between 1965 and 1999 he worked on eleven films, including Das gelobte Land (1975), Der Kurpfuscher (1982) and With Fire and Sword (1999).

In the course of his career he was awarded the Commander's Cross with Star, Officer's Cross and Knight's Cross of the Polonia Restituta Order. In May 2008 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music . In December 2012 he was promoted to retired lieutenant colonel for his work in the Polish Army Singing and Dance Ensemble.

Bernard Ładysz died on July 25, 2020, one day after his 98th birthday.
