life and career
Archard was the child of a well-to-do family; his father was the mayor of Fulham and a civilian jeweler . With the help of a scholarship, he began studying acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1938 . During the war , conscientious objector Archard did his alternative service with the Quakers .
After the end of the war he resumed his work as a stage actor - he had gained his first experience in the 1938/39 season. By the mid-1950s he was seen in numerous engagements across the country; from 1948 together with his partner James Belchamer , whom he met in 1948 at the Edinburgh Theater Festival . Both belonged for several years to a touring theater based in Torquay .
With no great success in sight, both wanted to emigrate to Canada in the late 1950s when a number of television engagements put their plans on hold. In 1959, producers Elwyn Jones and Robert Barr hired Archard to star in Spycatcher , a 24-part television series that was produced until 1961. From now on, the tall, distinguished-looking Archard was a sought-after star; In addition to frequent film appearances, he had guest roles in numerous TV programs, such as Chief Inspector McPhail alongside Francis Matthews and Ros Drinkwater in two episodes of the German-British television series Paul Temple or in Doctor Who , Z Cars , The Profis , Secret Order for John Drake , With umbrella, charm and bowler hat or dad's army . In addition, he could still be seen on stage, u. a. in the 1980/81 season at Old Vic
