Francis Matthews (born September 2, 1927 in York , England , † June 14, 2014 ) was a British theater, film and television actor .

Life

Francis Matthews was the brother of actor Paul Shelley . He was married to actress Angela Browne (1963 until her death on June 20, 2001) and had three children with her, including two sons, Damien Matthews and Paul Rattigan , who also became actors.

At 17, Matthews began working as a stage assistant in the theater and played his first role in Emlyn Williams ' The Corn Is Green at the Royal Theater in Leeds . He developed an extensive repertoire, which he completed with classical theater roles at the Oxford Playhouse.

He gained early film experience in film adaptations by the Hammer film studios , for example in Frankenstein's Revenge ( Revenge of Frankenstein , 1958), Blood for Dracula ( Dracula - Prince of Darkness , 1965) and Rasputin - The Mad Monk ( Rasputin the Mad Monk , 1966). Matthews also played the Lt. Compton in the Miss Marple movie Killer Ahoy! ( Murder Ahoy ! , 1964). He also spoke the role of the title character in the puppet series Captain Scarlet and Revenge of the Mysterons (1967).

After guest appearances in various series such as Mit Schirm, Charme und Melone , Simon Templar or The Adventures of Robin Hood , he got the lead role in the television series Paul Temple in 1969 , based on stories about the Durbridge detective Paul Temple . The series had 52 episodes, 39 of which were co-produced by Munich-based Taurus Film . Ros Drinkwater played the role of his wife Steve . The series was shot by the BBC in the first international co-production in television history together with ZDF . In the German version it was dubbed by Gert Günther Hoffmann . He had previously starred in the Durbridge film The World of Tim Frazer (1960).

In 1978, the 60-part television English course Follow Me! hung up. Francis Matthews was the presenter in all episodes, and he also appeared (with a handful of other actors) in new roles and disguises in the play scenes.

In England he worked mainly as a stage actor until his death, but he also directed.
