Bernard Darwin
Bernard Richard Meirion Darwin CBE JP (born September 7, 1876 , † October 18, 1961 in Cambridge ) was a British lawyer , sports journalist and writer .
Life
Darwin was the son of Francis Darwin (1848-1925) and his wife Amy Ruck († September 11, 1876). After his mother died of puerperal fever four days after birth , he grew up with his grandparents. His grandfather was the famous naturalist Charles Darwin (1809-1882).
Darwin was educated at Eton College and studied at Cambridge University . In Cambridge he played golf , where he won the University Sporting Blue award three years in a row (1895-1897) and was even team captain last year. In addition to his work as a lawyer , he wrote sporting articles for The Times and Country Life . Bernard Darwin wrote several books on golf and cricket . In 1934 he became captain of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews .
Bernard Darwin was posthumously elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2005 .
Marriage and offspring
In 1906, Bernard Darwin married the Irish artist Elinor Mary Monsell (1871–1954) in London . The marriage had two children:
