Bernard Wesphael (born September 25, 1958 in Waremme ) is a Belgian social worker and former politician of the Ecolo party .

biography

Bernard Wesphael grew up in the Walloon Hespengau (Hesbaye) in the province of Liège at a time of economic crisis when numerous businesses in the region closed. At 16 he left home and went to the Belgian Army , where he, however, because of insubordination repeated military arrest landed and was eventually dishonorably discharged. He then moved to the Cevennes in France for a few months . Back in Belgium, he then worked in Liège from 1979 to 1987 as a social pedagogue in youth work and open social work. He took part in protests by the anti-militarist and anti-nuclear movements . From 1978 to 1980 he was active with the Friends of the Earth (Amis de la Terre) Belgium.

Bernard Wesphael was a co-founder of the ecological party Ecolo in 1980. Bernard Wesphael was elected to the Liege Provincial Council for Ecolo in 1987 and entered the Walloon Parliament as an Ecolo member in 1999 . In 2004 he was re-elected to the Walloon Parliament despite an election result that was disappointing for himself and Ecolo. In the 2009 elections, however, he and Ecolo achieved the best result in their history. He was now chairman of the Ecolo group in the Walloon Parliament.

Within the Ecolo party, Wesphael was considered a " Fundi " and was critical of government participation. At the beginning of 2015 in Belgium he was one of the sharpest critics of the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe , which was signed in 2004, and was the only Walloon MEP to vote against it. He strongly advocated a secular , secular state as opposed to the current " state neutrality ".

In 2003 he stood at the Ecolo party congress together with Paul Lannoye and Ann-Mary Francken for the collective party leadership, but the trio only won 38.1% of the votes. He made another attempt together with Marie Corman at the Ecolo party congress in 2012, but the duo ended up in third and last place with 15%. He also failed in his attempt to become Ecolo candidate for the Walloon parliamentary presidency, because Patrick Dupriez eventually became the Walloon parliamentary president.

Disappointed about his isolation in the party, he left Ecolo on March 26, 2012. As a result, he was courted by several left-wing parties, including the Labor Party of Belgium ( Parti du Travail de Belgique ) (PTB). He also had contacts with the French Left Party ( Parti de Gauche ) chaired by Jean-Luc Mélenchon . On April 20, 2012, he announced the founding of a "left movement" ( Mouvement de Gauche ).

In September 2013, he withdrew from the “Left Movement” project after polls had predicted barely one percent of the votes and there had been disagreements with his fellow campaigners. In September 2017 he announced that he wanted to found a new political movement.

Murder charges

On November 1, 2013, Bernard Wesphael was arrested on the basis of an arrest warrant by a judge in Bruges . He was accused of murdering his wife Véronique Pirotton, whom he had married a year earlier, in a hotel in Ostend . Three days after his arrest, his arrest warrant was upheld by the court. In the meantime, the Royal Public Prosecutor's Office in Bruges ( nl. Procureur des Konings , "Procurator of the King") announced that, according to the autopsy report, Véronique Pirotton had died on October 31, 2013 as a result of violence. Bernard Wesphael objected that he found his wife dead in the bathroom. She was depressed and apparently took her own life by pulling a plastic bag over her head.

A counter-opinion by the defense in April 2014 showed that death could have occurred through poisoning with drugs in combination with alcohol or through asphyxiation - accidentally or with the intention of suicide. However, Bernard Wesphael's detention was extended on April 15, 2014.

On August 26, 2014, Bernard Wesphael was released conditionally by order of the Prosecution Chamber (Kamer van inbeschuldigingstelling) in Ghent .

On September 15, 2016, the main hearing opened before the jury court ( cour d'assises ) of Hainaut in Mons (Bergen). On October 6, 2016 Bernard Wesphael was due to the fault doubt acquitted .

In October 2016, his book Assassin ("Murderer") was published simultaneously in French and Dutch on the subject.
