Bernard te Gempt

Bernard te Gempt (born April 25, 1826 in Batenburg , † January 4, 1879 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch animal painter .

His parents wanted to train him to be a clergyman and then a businessman. Bernard te Gempt studied privately with Johannes Franciscus Christ (1790-1845) in Nijmegen and from 1850 at the Koninklijke Akademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam with Johan Willem Pieneman and Nicolaas Pieneman . Before 1846 he stayed in Düsseldorf .

After graduating, he devoted himself almost exclusively to animal painting. He also painted satirical dog pictures, such as "The Peace Congress in Paris" "The Dog Petition" and "The Flycatcher".

Thanks to the royal scholarship, he went on study trips to Belgium , France , Switzerland and Italy . He became a member of the Royal Academy in 1850 .

From 1865 to 1867 he worked together with Frederik Hendrik van Moorsel (1831–1901) as a photographer in the “Te Gempt & Van Moorsel” studio.

In 1872 he moved to the village of Hoedekenskerke in the municipality of Borsele and in 1874 to the village of Kapelle (Zeeland) . Soon he returned to Amsterdam. He passed out of life by suicide.
