Bernd Artur Heß (born April 17, 1954 in Selters ; † July 17, 2004 in Bonn ) was a German theoretical chemist and professor at the University of Bonn and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg .

Life

Bernd Hess grew up in Mogendorf in the Westerwald . From 1972 to 1977 he studied chemistry at the Technical University of Berlin and the University of Bonn. After receiving his doctorate in 1980 with Sigrid Peyerimhoff at the University of Bonn ( ab initio calculation of the fine structure of molecules ) and habilitation in 1986 at the University of Wuppertal, he became a visiting professor for theoretical chemistry and theoretical molecular physics in Bonn from 1986–1990 . He then held the same position as Professor of Theoretical Chemistry and worked on various projects of the German Research Foundation , including the Collaborative Research Center 334. In 1997 he was offered a chair for theoretical chemistry at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg , where he has been teaching since the 1998/1999 winter semester. In 2003 he accepted a chair for theoretical chemistry at the University of Bonn. He supervised the doctoral studies of Georg Jansen and Christof Hättig .

In 1984 he married Angela C. Voss (1955–2006). Bernd Artur Hess died in July 2004, leaving three children behind.

Scientific work

Bernd Heß 'areas of work were relativistic quantum chemistry , intermolecular interactions , computational chemistry , methods for calculating electron correlation and redox-active metal complexes . The Douglas-Kroll-Heß method for the practical formulation of Douglas-Kroll transformations for molecular systems with finite bases bears his name.
