Bernd Schneider (born April 16, 1925 in Burg near Magdeburg; † December 6, 2013 in Gießen ) was a German politician ( SPD ), captain d. R. and lawyer . He was Lord Mayor of the City of Gießen for 14 years and played a key role in the construction of the Gießener Ring .

Life

From 1952 to 1963 Schneider was an advisor to the Hessian Prime Minister Georg-August Zinn .

From 1963 to 1977, Schneider was Lord Mayor of the city of Giessen. In 1963 he succeeded the later Prime Minister of Hesse, Albert Osswald . He was the youngest Lord Mayor when he entered service and the longest serving Lord Mayor of the city of Gießen. At 16 years of service, Manfred Mutz was at the top of the city for a longer period of time. He was particularly committed to the elderly in Giessen. His works included the introduction of senior citizen's afternoons and trips, as well as the construction of age-appropriate living space. Both the construction of the Giessener Ring, which today still relieves the city center, and the flood protection in the western part of the city would not have been possible without his work. He was briefly state commissioner for the city ​​of Lahn . From 1967 to 1977 Schneider was chairman of the Heimatvereinigung Schiffenberg Gießen e. V.

At the age of 65, Schneider began a second course of studies at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen in the history department, which he completed after seven semesters. He received his PhD five years later. From 1972 to 1978, Schneider was the second chairman of the Institute for Media Education and Communication in Hesse. Even after his service, he campaigned for the interests of the older generation, among other things in the retirement movement. He was a co-founder of the "National Day of the Elderly Generation". In addition, he was committed as a captain of the reserve as the state chairman of the reservists' association and for 24 years as chairman of the Giessen Society for Defense and Security Technology.

He was married and had a son.
