Bernd Thijs [ ˈbɛrnt ˈtɛi̯s ] (born June 28, 1978 in Hasselt ) is a former Belgian football player . The defensive midfielder was last under contract from 2007 to 2014 in the Belgian first class at KAA Gent .

After retiring as an active player, he was promoted to the club's coaching staff and has been an assistant coach of the professional team at KAA Gent since 2014.

Professional career

The beginnings (1995-2000)

Bernd Thijs began his footballing career in his hometown Wellen , which is near his birthplace Hasselt. There he played for ten years in the youth team of Wellense SK, which is located there, before moving to the youth division of Standard Liège in 1993 . There he came under coach Robert Waseige after two years for his first appearances in the professional team. He had Thijs appear fourteen times in his debut season. In the next season, Thijs became a regular player under the new coach Jos Daerden and played a total of 29 league games in which he scored three goals. But during the summer break, Liège dismissed Daerden and a relatively chaotic season followed in which a total of three trainers worked for the club. Thijs also suffered from this and only made twelve appearances in the entire season. All in all, Thij's time in Liège was quite uneasy, due to constant coaching changes and poor placements in the final table. The only success until his move in the summer of 2000 was participation in the final of the Belgian Cup in 1999 , where the team was defeated by Lierse SK .

KRC Genk (2000-2004)

In 2000 he left Liège and moved to KRC Genk . There he reached a disappointing eleventh place in his first season with the team under coach Johan Boskamp . However, this was then dismissed shortly before the end of the season and briefly replaced before Sef Vergoossen took over as coach for the new season. Under his performance, the team played a strong season and in the end even surprisingly became Belgian champions. As a result, the team had qualified for the third qualifying round of the Champions League , in which they defeated Sparta Prague on the away goals rule . Thus, the team had reached the group stage, where they met Real Madrid , among others , but were eliminated in the end as bottom of the table. In the league, things went quite well in the two years after winning the championship, but the team could not repeat the success of the 2001/02 season. When coach Vergoossen went to Al-Jazira Club after the end of the 2003/04 season , Thijs also left the club and moved to Trabzonspor in Turkey .

Trabzonspor and the time in Mönchengladbach (2004–2007)

Moving to Turkey turned out to be the wrong decision relatively quickly. Under the direction of Ziya Doğan , Thijs made eleven missions after all, but after he was dismissed relatively shortly after the start of the season, he was no longer considered under the new interim coach İhsan Derelioğlu and, according to his own statements, also felt strongly socially isolated. So it was that he was still in the winter break in 2004 in the Bundesliga to Borussia Moenchengladbach moved, where he was awarded a contract by 2008. There he was promptly a regular player in his first six months under coach Dick Advocaat and finished tenth in the league with the foals . During the summer break in 2005, the Belgian broke his metatarsal bone in a friendly match against his old team-mates from Genk. Due to this injury, he had to pause a little longer at the beginning of the new season, but from the 9th matchday onwards he kept coming back to short appearances. As a result, he was operated on towards the end of the season and had to sit out longer. In the first half of the following season he then showed strong performances and was a regular for Borussia again for a short time. But an injury at the beginning of the second half of the season stopped him again and after the relegation of VfL at the end of the season he moved back to his homeland in Belgium.

Back at home (2007-2014)

In Belgium he signed with the KAA Gent . There he came straight to 22 missions in his first season, and he even scored one goal. In the next two seasons, however, he had to struggle with injuries again. Nevertheless, his team always managed to qualify for a European competition from 2008 to 2011, but the Belgians were mostly eliminated early there. Last season they even took part in qualifying for the Champions League , but failed there against Dynamo Kiev . The following season was then less successful, as Gent failed to qualify for the European Cup for the first time since 2008. For Thijs, however, the season went quite well, as he was spared injuries and made a total of 26 league appearances. After he was then only used relatively rarely, his last appearance in a professional league he had on September 1, 2012, he ended his career as an active at the end of the 2013/14 season and was immediately brought into the coaching staff of his club. From now on, he works there as an assistant coach alongside Hein Vanhaezebrouck .

Belgian national team

Shortly before the start of the 2002 World Cup, Thijs made his first two international appearances, where he was substituted on in the final stages. When shortly thereafter discharged WM him then summoned his former trainer from Liege, Robert Waseige, the squad of the Belgian national team . During the World Cup he didn't get a chance and the Belgians were eliminated in the round of 16 against eventual world champions Brazil . After the World Cup, he has played five more missions to date, in which he could not score.
