Bernd von der Marwitz (born June 17, 1661 in Leine in the Pyritz district ; † September 5, 1726 ibid) was a Prussian major general and heir on Leine.

Life

origin

His parents were David von der Marwitz (born September 26, 1602; † April 18, 1672), castle captain in Sonnenburg and heir to Bärfeld (Beerfeld) and Babbin, and his wife Anna Sophie, née von Wulffen (born October 24, 1617; † April 18, 1675). She was a widowed von Schapelow from the Steinhöffel family and daughter of Adolf von Wulffen and Eva von Winterfeld . Major General David von der Marwitz was his brother.

Military career

In 1676 Marwitz went to the “Derflinger” regiment as a musketeer . During the Northern War against Sweden he took part in the siege of Szczecin and the landing on Rügen . In 1684 he became a lieutenant in the "Alt-Holstein" battalion. He took part in the Great Turkish War and fought at the siege of Ofen , where he was buried in a mine explosion . Marwitz survived and became a captain in 1689 . During the Palatine War of Succession from 1690 to 1697 he took part in the fighting in the Netherlands. He fought at Steenkerke and was in the siege of Bonn , Charleroy, Huy, Namur and Ath. On January 27, 1696 he was promoted to major and in 1698 to Oberistwachtmeister.

During the War of the Spanish Succession , Marwitz fought again in the Netherlands from 1702 to 1709. On December 6, 1706 he was appointed colonel and commander of the battalion "Count Truchsess von Waldburg". After the troops returned, he became a brigadier in the "von Heyden" battalion on February 29, 1712 . On February 8, 1714, he received his resignation as major general of the infantry. His successor, Captain von Blixen, had to show him 20 thalers a month. He also received the Order de la Générosité from the king . He died on September 5, 1726 on the Leine estate.

family

On October 25, 1699, he married Katharina Margarethe von Rothenburg (* September 26, 1683; † September 30, 1738) from the Pommerzig family , daughter of the Rittmeister Friedrich Wilhelm von Rothenburg († 1701). The couple had three sons and one daughter:

  • David Bernhard Wilhelm (born February 1, 1701)
  • Christian Friedrich (June 2, 1702; † 1772) ⚭ Louisa Helena Tugendreich von Sydow (* November 17, 1720; † April 15, 1757)
  • Daughter (born May 9, 1703) ⚭ April 29, 1722 Hans Wilhelm von Mörner Councilor, heir to Zellin and Clossow
  • Alexander Magnus (born July 12, 1706; † Jung)
