from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bernhard Abel (*? In Cologne ; † - in question - October 13, 1563 in Innsbruck ) was a German sculptor and stonemason of the Renaissance .

Life

Little is known about Bernhard Abel, who came from the Abel family of artists in Cologne. In 1561 he stayed in Vienna . On April 28, 1561 received he and his brothers Arnold Abel , also a stonemason and sculptor, and in Prague living painter and draftsman Florian Abel , in Vienna the common contract for design of the long unfinished tomb of Emperor Maximilian I in the Hofkirche to Innsbruck by twenty-four reliefs of marble .

The date of his death is given differently: late December 1563 or early January 1564 are also mentioned. When his brother Arnold died († 1564), the further execution of the relief work was entrusted to the later court sculptor Alexander Colin , who took over all twenty-four drawings from Florian Abel. He was able to complete one relief with his brother Arnold on his own; two more had only been started.
