Life

Expelled from his fatherland as a novice with his religious community during the Kulturkampf , he lived in North America from 1875 to 1881, ordained a priest in Cleveland in 1879 . In 1880 he became professor of theology and philosophy at the seminary in Cleveland.

In 1881 he moved to Italy . Member of the Collegio San Bonaventura founded in Quaracchi near Florence for the publication of the Franciscan Scholastics. Collaborator of the learned Fr Ignatius Jeiler OFM 1883 director of the Irish Franciscan monastery and college Sant'Isidoro a Capo le Case . He redeveloped the dilapidated monastery and expanded it into an exemplary religious seat. The pilgrimage sanctuary of S. Maria ad Rupes, connected to the basilica of Castel Sant'Elia , was restored and expanded under his direction, and the community in Amaseno was renewed. Pope Leo XIII. became aware of him and sent him on visitation trips to Egypt and Palestine. In San Isidoro he accepted Ernst M. Roloff, who later became an important philologist and pedagogue ( Lexicon of Pedagogy ), into the Catholic Church.

On March 19, 1900, he was ordained bishop of the Diocese of Nepi and Sutri . Within a short time he managed to rehabilitate the ailing diocese. He improved the financial situation of the clergy and had the episcopal residences in Nepi, Sutri and Capranica thoroughly renovated. He gave the city of Nepi the life-size marble statues of the martyr bishops Ptolemy and Romanus , which were erected at the episcopal palace.

In the dispute about the renewal of the Franciscan Order, he sided with Pius X and announced the Motu proprio Quo magis of October 23, 1911 to the brothers gathered in the Basilica of San Antonio. In the same year he took part in the coronation ceremony of the miraculous image Werl (August 13th) at which he gave the festive sermon. Pius X called him the pearl of the Italian episcopate . He also entrusted him with the diocese of Viterbo . In 1914 he was also apostolic administrator of the dioceses of Viterbo and Tuscania , as well as of Monterosi , Ponzano and San Oreste .

When the First World War broke out in 1914, he was exposed to violent attacks and slander from the Italian Masonic Lodge. Il Messaggero suspected him of being a German spy and an agent of the Vatican . He was forced to leave his diocese and defend his reputation in court. After a short illness and an unsuccessful operation, he died. His body was buried in the catacombs he had built near the basilica of Castel San Elia.
