Life

Bernhard Duhm was the son of a brewer and studied theology in Göttingen from 1867 to 1870 with Albrecht Ritschl , Heinrich Ewald and Julius Wellhausen . From 1871 he was a repetiteur at the Theological Foundation and taught at the Theological Faculty from 1873, initially as a private lecturer , and from 1877 as associate professor for the Old Testament . From 1888 on he taught in Basel . In 1896 he was rector of the university.

Duhm was one of the most important and influential Old Testament scholars of his time. Josef Hromádka was one of his students . Duhm was a representative of the so-called religious history school . Even today, his contributions to research into the prophets are pioneering, trying to gain a history of the development of the Israelite religion from the peculiarities of the individual prophets.

Epoch-making were his separation of the so-called God's servant songs Isa 42: 1-4 (7); 49.1-6; 50.4-9; 52.13 to 53.12 as an independent literary complex within the second part of the Book of Isaiah (chapters 40 to 55, so-called Deutero-Isaiah ) and in 1892 his attribution of chapters 56 to 66 of the Book of Isaiah as an independent anonymous prophet in early post- exile Persian times (so-called Deutero-Isaiah ) . Tritojesaja ). In terms of research history, Duhm's reference to the literary layers in the Book of Jeremiah was also important .

Duhm was married to Helene Bunjes and had three sons, Hans (1878–1946), Dietrich (1880–1954) and Andreas (1883–1975), all of whom were Swiss champions in chess .
