Bernhard Schlagheck

Bernhard Stephan Schlagheck (born September 3, 1956 in Mönchengladbach ) is a German diplomat . He has been Ambassador to Pakistan since August 2019 . Before that he was ambassador to Nigeria .

Life

Bernhard Schlagheck studied law and economics after graduating from high school . After completing his studies, he worked for Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt am Main and New York for a few years .

The theater is one of his hobbies.

career

In 1988 Schlagheck joined the foreign service and completed the preparatory service for the higher foreign service by 1989. After a first assignment in the Foreign Office (among other things as a speechwriter for the then Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher ), he went to Kuwait in 1991 as Deputy Ambassador . In 1993 he moved to the Permanent Mission of the Federal Republic of Germany to NATO in Brussels . This was followed from 1996 to 1999 as an advisor to the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the European Council and from 1999 to 2001 as a political advisor at the Moscow embassy .

From 2001 to 2004 Schlagheck headed the Council of Europe, Baltic Sea Council, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein in the Foreign Office. Between 2004 and 2007 he worked for the United Nations , initially as Deputy Head of the Political Department at the UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) and from 2006 as Chief of Staff at the UN Special Envoy for the Status Process in Kosovo (UNOSEK) in Vienna .

This was followed by tasks in the Foreign Office, first in the planning staff and from August 2008 as head of the NATO department in the political department. Schlagheck was next employed in 2010 as Deputy Head of the Representation at the Holy See in Rome , from 2012 to 2014 he headed the Office of the State Secretaries of the Foreign Office and from 2014 to 2016 he was Director of Technology and Export Control in the Economic Department of the Foreign Office.

In summer 2016 he was appointed ambassador to Abuja , Nigeria . Since August 2019 he has been ambassador to Islamabad , Pakistan .
