Bernhard Steffen (topographer)

Bernhard Steffen (born February 1, 1844 in Prussia , † December 15, 1891 in Constantinople ) was a German topographer .

He was a Prussian colonel (lieutenant) in the general staff , member of the board of directors of the Berlin War Academy and a general in Württemberg . In 1884 he was captain and battery chief in the Hessian field artillery regiment No. 11. Bernhard Steffen was also a member of the Association for Hessian History and Regional Studies . In May 1885 he married Ottilie Schricker in Kassel . Bernhard Steffen was later appointed major in the Hessian army. He became a wing adjutant to Sultan Abdülhamid II and held the Ottoman rank of Brigade General and the title of Pasha .

Bernhard Steffen visited Greece in the winter of 1881/2 and drew detailed maps of the Mycenae archaeological site , the area around Mycenae and the Argolis . Heinrich Schliemann had first contact with Bernhard Steffen in 1883 and ordered the map series in 1884. In December 1889, Schliemann invited him to Troy ; he should testify that the archaeological site is a city. On December 15, 1891, Steffen died of typhus in Constantinople.

Part of Bernhard Steffen's estate is in the archive of the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin. However, the main part was destroyed in 1945 in the fire of the Reich Archives in Potsdam.
