Bernhard Zech , since 1716 Bernhard von Zech , actually Bernhard Edler Herr zu Zech , (born August 31, 1649 in Weimar , † March 21, 1720 in Dresden ) was a minister and writer at the Saxon court in Dresden .

Life

Bernhard Zech was born in Weimar as the son of the cloth maker Bernhard Zech. His father was a council relative and head of the divine chest there, died early, so that Bernhard's mother, Maria geb. Koch entered into a second marriage with the valet Johann Buckel from Weimar.

Bernhard attended the Princely High School in Weimar until August 1667 and from August 1669 went to the University of Jena . A permanent university visit was financially only possible because Duke Johann Ernst II granted him an annual scholarship of 25 thalers on December 3, 1669. As early as 1674 and in the following year he presented his first two publications, which ensured that Duke Friedrich von Sachsen-Gotha offered him the position of secret and feudal secretary in 1676, which he accepted. At first, however, he accompanied the younger brothers of his employer on an educational trip through Western Europe. In the spring of 1678 he began his service as a secretary. In this position he moved back to his hometown in 1684, where he was promoted to court and government councilor in 1686 by Duke Wilhelm Ernst of Saxony-Weimar.

When Bernhard Zech stayed at the court in Dresden in 1690 for official reasons, his plan to change to the Electoral Saxon service matured. On December 7, 1691 he was appointed to the court, judiciary, chamber court and border council of Elector Johann Georg IV of Saxony. On December 24, 1697 he was promoted to the Real Secret Council by August the Strong . Zech worked in this function until his death in 1720 and influenced numerous decisions of the Elector-King. He was indispensable to its governor Anton Egon von Fürstenberg and was even referred to as his "oracle".

Bernhard Zech became a member of the audit council in 1697, which carried out a review of people and institutions with the aim of uncovering tax evasion, unjustified spending, bribery or financial mismanagement. In this role of auditor, Bernherd Zech was harassed by several court cavaliers while going to church, so that he even asked for his release from court service. The Elector-King issued a patent for him in July 1698 and encouraged him to continue to work actively as an auditor.

In 1703, Bernhard Zech headed the investigation against Grand Chancellor Wolf Dietrich Graf von Beichlingen, who was imprisoned at the Königstein Fortress .

On February 3, 1716, Bernhard Zech, who came from a middle-class background, was his wife Regina Elisabeth and their marital heirs to the Emperor Charles VI. in Vienna raised to the nobility and given them a coat of arms.

In his free time, Zech devoted himself to numerous literary works. He left behind several manuscripts that were deposited in the family archive at Schloss Goseck .
