Bernhard von Guérard

Bernhard von Guérard , also Emile Bernhard Chevalier de Guérard (* 1771 or 1776 in Düsseldorf , † November 11, 1836 in Naples , Kingdom of the Two Sicilies ), was a German-Austrian portrait and miniature painter .

Life

Von Guérard first studied law at the University of Duisburg . Soon he switched to the fine arts and deepened portrait painting . In 1793 he received an offer to go to London as a portrait draftsman . However, he turned down this offer and went to Vienna in the company of Prince Carl Auersperg . There he made a name for himself as a painter of portrait miniatures, which he created in watercolor on ivory, sometimes also in oil on wood. He received his commissions from the Viennese court and high nobility. From 1817 to 1819 he was in the service of the Schwarzenberg family .

From 1804 to 1806 he tried to establish a "business with paintings and art objects" with his brother Franz (François), who was in Lemberg . He also dealt with color chemistry and had colors developed by him distributed through trade. In 1808 he married Josepha, née Schulz von Leichtenthal, in Vienna, who gave birth to her son Eugen in 1811 , who also became a painter.

In the last years of his life, von Guérard stayed in Italy . He came to Venice in 1827 and exhibited in Rome in 1831 . He died from cholera in November 1836 while staying in Naples.
