Bertha Züricher

Bertha Züricher (born March 20, 1869 in Bern ; † October 7, 1949 there ; entitled to live in Burgdorf ) was a Swiss painter , wood carver and writer .

life and work

Bertha Züricher grew up as the daughter of the chief judge and former colonel and newspaper editor Friedrich Alfred Züricher (1837-1887) in Bern. When their father died, the family could no longer move into their newly built house, which was built on the land of their uncle Leuenberger on the Murihalde , and had to sell it. The buyer was Joseph Victor Widmann , who from then on called his home Leuenberg .

As a young painter, Bertha Züricher often stayed for weeks at her sister's house in Lauenen and painted pictures of the landscape and the village population, etc. a. from the friends of the Gheret family. During the summer Bertha Züricher lived next door to wife Gehret on the Maiensäss , while Gehret's paralyzed husband lived with daughter and son-in-law in Lauenen. On the Maiensäss u. a. also the picture The Dairy Girl , which was later exhibited in the Salon de Paris . The model for this was not a local dairymaid, but a Parisian who wanted to learn agriculture on site.

Bertha Züricher painted mountain and landscapes , portraits of children , watercolors and made woodcuts. She exhibited her works a. a. in the Kunsthalle Bern , the Kunstmuseum Bern and the Kunsthaus Zürich . She wrote columns for Die Berner Woche in words and pictures: a sheet for local art and art .

After her death, she was honored with a large retrospective at the Kunsthalle Bern. Her estate is administered by her descendants.
