Berthold Schneider (* 1965 in Marburg an der Lahn ) is a German artistic director , director and dramaturge .

Berthold Schneider has been artistic director of the Wuppertal Opera since the beginning of the 2016/17 season. In the meantime, the house has been widely used in critics' surveys. B. in " Die Welt ", " Opernwelt " or nominated for the German Theater Prize " Der Faust " in categories like "Best Staging", "Best Theater" or "Best Young Artist". Wuppertal productions that received widespread attention were the first music theater work by the staging collective Rimini Protokoll with John Cage's “ Europeras 1 & 2 ” (2019), the first production in western foreign countries by Russian young star Timofey Kulyabin with “Rigoletto” (2016) and the staging of “Luisa Miller” the winner of the Opera Awards 2017, Barbora Horáková Joly. In autumn 2019, the "Opernstudio NRW" founded on Berthold Schneider's initiative was opened - a cooperation between the Aalto-Theater Essen , the Dortmund Opera , the Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen and the Wuppertal Opera , funded by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.

After studying piano at the Kassel Music Academy , Schneider began studying music theater directing at the University of Iowa in the United States of America. He then worked between 1992 and 1997 as a music dramaturge, initially at the Braunschweig State Theater , later at the Münster City Theaters and finally at the Mannheim National Theater .

He has made a name for himself above all by staging large projects in the border area between music and visual arts. The Berlin premiere of the opera Einstein on the Beach by Philip Glass and Der Ring des Nibelungen Adventure in Stereo in the premises of the former State Bank of the GDR in Berlin attracted particular attention . Here, under the name of staatsbankberlin, a center for concerts, operas, readings and discussions was set up, the artistic director of which was Berthold Schneider.

From 2005 until his move to Saarland in 2006, he held the position of chief dramaturge at the Dortmund Opera . Until summer 2012 he was the opera director of the Saarland State Theater in Saarbrücken . From 2012 to 2014 he worked as a consultant for international collaborations for the English National Opera , in the following season as opera director for the Staatstheater Darmstadt .

Berthold has been the opera director of the Wuppertaler Bühnen since the 2016/2017 season . Under the directorship of Berthold Schneider, the Wuppertal Opera was strongly networked internationally (co-productions with the English National Opera , London, the Deutsche Oper Berlin or the Theater Klagenfurt). The newly engaged ensemble member Catriona Morison won the internationally renowned competition “ BBC Cardiff Singer of the World ” in both opera and lied categories in the first season of the artistic directorship . The Wuppertal Opera was awarded the “Lisa 2018” design prize for the “We love WOpertal” advertising campaign designed by Berthold Schneider. The "Sound of the City" festival, which has been held annually since 2016 and brings opera and urban society in close contact, was included in funding from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in 2019 as part of the "New Paths" program.
