Bertrand Roth
Bertrand Roth (born February 12, 1855 in Degersheim , Canton St. Gallen , † January 24, 1938 in Bern ) was a Swiss composer and pianist .
Life
Born in Degersheim in Toggenburg, Germany , Bertrand Roth moved with his family to Plauen in 1858 , after his father, an embroidery artist , had received the order to set up the first embroidery factory in Germany. After attending grammar school, he began studying philosophy before turning to music and enrolling at the Leipzig Conservatory . In 1877 he moved to Weimar as a student of Franz Liszt , whom he accompanied on two trips to Pest and Rome .
In 1879 Bertrand Roth appeared for the first time as a soloist at the “General German Music Festival” in Wiesbaden . In 1880 he was appointed piano teacher at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt am Main . There he was one of the founders of the Raff Conservatory as its co-director. Roth, who gave concerts in many cities in Germany, Italy and repeatedly in Switzerland in the following years , went to Dresden in 1884 as a piano virtuoso, teacher and composer . Since 1885 he gave piano lessons as a special subject at the Dresden “Royal Conservatory”. Georg Pittrich was one of the students he taught and who received a “certificate” for their achievements as a piano player . In Dresden, from 1901 to 1930, Roth organized around 300 Sunday matinees with works by contemporary composers in the “Bertrand Roth Music Salon” . In 1903 he was appointed royal professor.
A street in Plauen was dedicated to Bertrand Roth on his 75th birthday in 1925, Bertrand-Roth-Straße in 08525 Plauen.
Bertrand Roth's compositional work includes songs, piano and string music.
The estate of Bertrand Roth is kept in the Saxon State Library - Dresden State and University Library.
