Bertrice Small (2008)

Bert Rice Small (* 9. December 1937 in Manhattan , New York as Bert Williams Rice ; † 24. February 2015 in Southold, Long Iceland ) was an American writer. She was a successful and prolific writer of historical romance novels ; her work is counted as trivial literature.

life and work

Bertrice Small was the daughter of radio personalities Doris S. and David R. Williams. She attended St. Mary's private school in Peekskill , New York, run by Anglican nuns, and then studied at the Attended Western College for Women in Oxford , Ohio (1955-1958) and at the Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School (1958-1959). After working for various New York companies, she married the photographer and designer George Sumner Small IV († 2012) in 1963, who studied history at Princeton University . A son was born in the marriage.

In 1978, Small published her first historical romance novel, The Kadin, at Avon Books . This Bodice Ripper tells the story of an English noblewoman who was sold as a slave in the harem of an oriental sultan during the Renaissance period and who found erotic fulfillment and great love with her new master. In the same year a sequel followed, Love Wild and Fair , with the story of a great-granddaughter of the heroine from The Kadin . Characteristic of Small's novels were very explicit descriptions of the sexual relationships between their characters.

In 1980, Small moved to Ballantine Books , a publisher that has been part of the Random House group since 1973 . By 2001 she published 16 further historical romance novels there, which took place in very different parts of Europe in different epochs, such as in the Egypt of the Pharaohs ( Beloved , 1983), in Byzantium ( Adora , 1980; To Love Again , 1993), in the Middle Ages ( The Love Slave , 1997), in medieval Wales ( A Moment in Time , 1991; A Memory of Love , 2000), in Knightly England ( Hellion , 1999), in the England of the Plantagenet kings ( The Spitfire , 1990), in Elizabethan England (O'Malley Family Saga, 1981–1992) and in the Regency period ( The Dutchess , 2001).

Since 1986 Small has also published for Penguin Books , including the Byzantium novel Enchantress Mine (1987), the late Middle Ages series Friarsgate Inheritance Saga (2002–2005) and Border Chronicles (2006–2011) and the tetralogy The, which was part of the Florentine Renaissance Silk Merchant's Daughters (2012–2015), but also the Channel series (2004–2011), a 6-part series of erotic novels with a plot in the present.

Another publisher where Small published her work from 1997 on was Kensington Books . There the historical romance novels The Innocent (1999; English Middle Ages), Deceived (1998; 17th century), Betrayed (2001; Regency) and the Regency series Skye's Legacy (1997-2003) appeared. In 2004, Small published a fantasy love novel for the first time in the English legendary novel The Dragon Lord's Daughters . By 2010, 6 more followed, which she published under the title World of Hetar with the Canadian publisher Harlequin .

Bertrice Small died in her Long Island home in 2015 after suffering from cancer of kidney failure.

She was a member of the Authors Guild , the Romance Writers of America and the author organization PASIC (Published Author's Special Interest Chapter).
