The professional association erotic and sexual services e. V. (BesD) , is a German association of sex workers with the declared aim of improving their working and living conditions. Only active and former sex workers can become members of the association founded in Cologne in 2013 .

Foundation and goals

The association was founded on October 13, 2013 in Cologne.

The goals of the BesD are to decriminalize and de-victimize sex work and strengthen the rights of sex workers vis-à-vis politics, customers and brothel operators. The BesD would like to give prostitutes a voice and offers them the opportunity to express themselves on its website with their own voice on current issues and their political situation.

He wants to help convey a realistic picture of sex work as a professional service and to ensure that sex workers are protected and not prevented from volunteering in this profession. In the emerging process of the revision of the Prostitution Act from 2002 by the Merkel III government , the association strongly advocates not leaving prostitutes out as the main victims, but integrating them into the opinion-forming and legislative process (“Everyone is talking about us, but nobody talks to us. ”).

A spokesman for the Ministry of Health of North Rhine-Westphalia , where an estimated 37,000 people in prostitution are active, welcomed 2013 in principle the establishment "of such a professional organization." The German AIDS-Hilfe supports the call of the professional association, as veterans of whores movement as Hydra and Madonna . The ver.di union supported the establishment by providing premises. Furthermore, various parties such as Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen , the Pirate Party and Die Linke support the establishment and the objectives of the BesD.

Positions, work and actions

On 29 October 2013, the Association published the " appeal FOR prostitution for strengthening the rights and improving the living and working conditions of people in sex work " as a reply to the appeal against prostitution by Alice Schwarzer . According to the BesD, the majority of prostitutes in Germany work voluntarily in prostitution.

Some of the association's co-founders are involved in the public discussion to defend their interests, for example Lena Morgenroth and Amber Laine, who appeared in talk shows by Günther Jauch and Sandra Maischberger , and the association's former press spokeswoman, Undine de Rivière, at Stern TV and panorama . Fabienne Freymadl appeared on a show on Radio Reboot.fm and in political panel discussions of the Greens . Tanja Sommer spoke to Federal Minister Manuela Schwesig in August 2014 , when she visited the OPERA model project in Nuremberg, about the planned registration requirement for prostitutes.

BesD congresses took place in cooperation with Bufas in 2014 and 2016. In 2018 and 2019 there were congresses in Berlin, where only sex workers were involved. In addition, a World of Whorecraft sex work fair took place in 2019, in which the network for critical sex work research was also involved.

In September 2014, the association spoke out against the introduction of a statutory condom requirement because it was not possible to monitor compliance without undue repression.

criticism

In March 2015, Ann-Kathrin Müller doubted in Spiegel that, given the low number of members, only three-digit according to self-reported numbers, the BesD could represent the interests of all sex workers. It was also criticized that the board of directors of the association itself operated domino studios, in which other women also work, and that the BesD was supported by the “Brothel Operators Association” UEGD in founding it. Thereupon the CSU members of the Bundestag Barbara Lanzinger , Hans-Peter Uhl and Volker Ullrich accused the Federal Family Minister Manuela Schwesig of having taken “dubious associations” into their trust. Sex workers who attended the establishment of the BesD contradicted Müller's claim that the UEGD supported the establishment. Founding member Melanie Schwarz stated that UEGD CEO Holger Rettig was “definitely not there when it was founded”, which would not have been possible anyway “because he was never an active sex worker”.
