After the first AIDS cases occurred in 1981 and a social discussion began, Deutsche Aidshilfe e. V. (DAH) was founded on September 23, 1983 in Berlin on the initiative of the nurse Sabine Lange and the publisher Bruno Gmünder by her and gay men. The first board of directors included Sabine Lange, the lawyer and gay activist Stefan Reiss and the host of the gay bar "Knolle". The aims were education and information, support for the sick and commitment against the additional repression of gay lifestyles that was feared at the time.

Since 1985 the DAH has been the umbrella organization for around 120 regional member organizations. At the beginning of 1990, Aids-Hilfe was founded in Leipzig, the first association in the new federal states. Only in Weimar was there the AidsBeratungsCentrum as early as 1989, from which AIDS-Hilfe Weimar & Ostthüringen e. V. emerged.

On November 14, 2001, Aids Hilfe Wien was one of the first 44 organizations to receive the Austrian seal of approval for donations .

Deutsche Aidshilfe e. V.

In 1983, Deutsche AIDS-Hilfe was founded in Berlin and today, as an umbrella organization, it represents over a hundred regional groups. In 2019, Deutsche AIDS-Hilfe e.V. named itself. V. in German Aidshilfe e. V. around. In the meantime, Deutsche Aidshilfe e. V. (DAH) is the oldest organization that supports and coordinates the work of AIDS organizations throughout Germany. As a conversation partner, she is in constant contact with all major aid organizations at home and abroad. It includes numerous local AIDS aid associations that support people who are HIV-positive or who have AIDS on site.

In October 2008 the general meeting in Erfurt almost completely changed the board after the old board was unanimously not discharged.

On October 13, 2008, Deutsche Aidshilfe started the first nationwide HIV prevention campaign for men who have sex with men with “I know what I'm doing” .

The DAH board signed the Mexico Manifesto in October 2008 .

On September 23, 2013, the German Aids Aid was 30 years old. Under the motto “Did you actually know?”, The focus was drawn on the challenges of the present as part of an anniversary campaign.

In November 2014, a new board was elected at the annual general meeting in Lübeck. Its members include: Ulf Hentschke-Kristal, Winfried Holz, Manuel Izdebski and Sylvia Urban. In December 2016 Björn Beck was appointed to the Executive Board as a further member.

Also in November 2014, the member organizations of the DAH committed themselves to promoting the involvement of people with HIV even more. For this purpose, a new body of the association, the posithive faces, was used. The task of the positive faces is to ensure the participation and networking of HIV-positive people in the association. At the same time, the member organizations and the DAH strive to have at least half of their organs, committees and working groups with HIV-positive people.

On May 12, 2017, Deutsche Aidshilfe launched the "No AIDS for All (until 2020)" campaign. At the time the campaign started, around 1,000 people were still suffering from AIDS each year. The campaign aims to ensure that no one in Germany will have to contract AIDS after an HIV infection by 2020.

Berliner Aids-Hilfe e. V.

As an example, the Berliner Aids-Hilfe e. V. called. Your work takes place against the background that in Berlin alone around 340 people are infected with HIV each year and 35 people die of the infectious disease. In July 2016, the state of Berlin joined the Fast-Track Cities Initiative to end AIDS deaths as quickly as possible. This makes Berlin the first and so far only German city to have joined this initiative.

The almost 300 members of the association support the work of the 210 full-time and voluntary employees. Every year, 7,000 to 8,000 counseling contacts take place in the Berlin AIDS Help Center, and another 5,000 to 6,000 on the anonymous counseling hotline 19 4 11. Around 6,000 guests use the BAH breakfasts each year. The 30 voluntary "Friends in the Hospital" (FriKs) have 1000 contacts every year. The work is done by around 27 full-time employees (to 22.53 full-time positions) and 180 volunteer employees. HIV-positive and negative, men and women, gays , lesbians and heterosexuals work in the association .

They are all committed to fighting stigmatization, discrimination and marginalization of people with HIV / AIDS and to raise funds for the work of the non-profit and charitable association.

Berliner Aids-Hilfe is also a member of the German Aids Aid and the German Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband (dpw) . It is one of the largest AIDS organizations in Germany and is represented in the circle of the six metropolitan AIDS organizations (Berlin, Düsseldorf , Frankfurt am Main , Hamburg , Cologne and Munich ). The BAH is also in the network of the European telephone hotlines ENAH ( European Network of AIDS Helplines ). She is also a signatory of the Transparent Civil Society Initiative .
