Beschorneria yuccoides is a species of the genus Beschorneria in the subfamily of the agave family (Agavoideae). The specific epithet yuccoides is derived from the Greek word -oides for 'to resemble' and the botanical name of the genus Yucca .

description

Beschorneria yuccoides grows without a trunk. The 20 to 35 linear-lanceolate, (somewhat) leathery foliage leaves widened at their base and taper to a point and are narrowed to 1.25 centimeters above the base. The top is bare, the bottom is rough. The gray-green to green, glauke leaf blade is 40 to 60 (rarely up to 90) centimeters long and 3.3 to 3.5 (rarely up to 10) centimeters wide. The tip is pointed, the leaf margins finely serrated.

The inflorescence reaches a height of 100 to 180 (rarely up to 320) centimeters. The shaft is dark red, the tip initially overhanging and later upright. The bracts are red, the flower stalks 0.4 to 3.5 (rarely up to 30) millimeters long. The bare to balding flowers are 40 to 50 millimeters long. Their pointed, red or green-yellowish, red tinged tepals are linear-oblong, oblong or spatulate and have a length of 33 to 40 millimeters and are 3.5 to 7 millimeters wide. The tepals are not fused together, but are tightly inclined and form a tubular structure. Their tips are green, the upper ones are about 10 millimeters long, somewhat spread out and slightly hairy. The thread-thin, 35 millimeter long stamens do not protrude from the perigone. The anthers are 3.5 to 6 millimeters long. The cylindrical, dark red ovary , slightly constricted at the neck, has a length of 20 millimeters and a width of 5 millimeters. The stylus is thread-thin, the scar somewhat hairy.

The elongated to almost spherical fruits are 30 to 40 millimeters long and 15 to 25 millimeters wide. They contain flat black seeds 7 to 8 millimeters long and 3.5 to 5 millimeters wide.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 60.

Systematics and distribution

Beschorneria yuccoides is common in the Mexican states of Hidalgo , Puebla and Veracruz at altitudes of 2700 to 3000 meters.

The first description by Karl Heinrich Emil Koch was published in 1859. Included as a synonym in the species are Beschorneria bracteata Jacobi ex Baker (1864), Beschorneria viridiflora Hort. Hamb. ex Anonymus (1892) and Beschorneria hidalgorupicola Matuda (1967).

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Beschorneria yuccoides subsp. yuccoides : It only occurs in southern Hidalgo.
  • Beschorneria yuccoides subsp. dekosteriana (K.Koch) Govaerts : It occurs in the states of Hidalgo, Puebla and Veracruz.
