Betzhorn is a district of the municipality of Wahrenholz , in the Gifhorn district in Lower Saxony . The name is pronounced with a long e ( Beetshorn ).
The village has now grown together with the neighboring village of Wahrenholz in the south thanks to new buildings. In the north, a road initially led to the Heiliger Hain nature reserve ; it was only expanded to Oerrel in the post-war period .
history
Betzhorn probably dates back to around 1150, when Wends were settled here in the course of colonization east of the Elbe . In the 13th century, a document mentioned that the Hildesheim bishop Konrad II von Riesenberg separated Wahrenholz with two other villages, Betzhorn and Westerholz , from the archdeaconate of Hankensbüttel and that these three villages then formed a separate parish . In the 15th century Betzhorn had around 50 inhabitants, in 1489 a tax list listed five full farms and two Kötner. In 1528, the Reformation was introduced in Wahrenholz, whose parish also includes Betzhorn . The first census in 1811 showed that Betzhorn had now grown to 201 inhabitants. In 1838 a fire engine was purchased in Wahrenholz, and Betzhorn was also part of the fire fighting district. In 1888 there were 257 inhabitants in Betzhorn, in 1925 there were already 300. In 1932 the Isenhagen district , to which Betzhorn belonged, was dissolved and Betzhorn moved to the Gifhorn district. In 1939 the number of inhabitants rose to 351 when the Teichgut settlement was founded in 1933 . After 1945, the population increased further due to the settlement of expellees from the German eastern regions. In 1950 Betzhorn had 633 residents, some of whom, however, soon moved away because of the low number of jobs available. A new school building was built around 1962, which was closed on April 1, 1972 and is now used as a village community center. On March 1, 1974, the municipality of Betzhorn lost its independence and was incorporated into Wahrenholz.
Infrastructure
For over 100 years exist in Betzhorn the restaurant Lönskrug and the volunteer fire department Betzhorn, is one of today also a fire Musikzug. The infrastructure also includes a courtyard café, the DRK readiness Wahrenholz, a playground, a swimming lake, sports facilities and the war memorial. The school, the grocery store (Heiliger-Hain-Str. 28), the post office and the Heidekrug restaurant (Grüner Weg 3) were closed. The Wahrenholz parish has a trombone choir in Betzhorn. Kindergarten, school, post office, bank and savings bank, shopping facilities for daily needs, church (Evangelical-Lutheran) and cemetery are available in the neighboring village of Wahrenholz. The closest Catholic church is the Assumption of Mary in Wesendorf, around 8 kilometers away .
A tourist attraction is the Heilige Hain around two kilometers north of Betzhorn, one of the oldest nature reserves in Germany, in which an original piece of the Lüneburg Heath cultural landscape with heather areas, unspoilt mixed stands and, above all, juniper groups has been preserved. For the core area, it was decreed as early as 1913 that the cultural species ratio could no longer be changed; the area, which has meanwhile increased from 5.75 to 40.30 hectares, has been under nature protection in today's sense since 1969. A Hermann-Löns memorial stone has stood northeast of the Holy Grove since 1984 . Other nature reserves near Betzhorn are Rössenbergheide - Külsenmoor and the Oerrelbach lowland area .
