Beyond Good & Evil ( BGE for short ) is a computer game by the French game developer Ubisoft based on an idea by Michel Ancel , the foster father of the first two Rayman games. The fantasy game, released in 2003 for PC and game consoles, takes place on the fictional planet Hyllis, on which the reporter Jade uncovered a large-scale conspiracy.

action

The freelance reporter Jade lives with her uncle Pey'j, an anthropomorphic pig, and some orphans in a lighthouse on a small island on the planet Hyllis. Hyllis has always been at war with the hostile aliens "DomZ", who seem to kidnap civilians again and again. The Alpha Department, a kind of military police, led by a general named Keck, tries everything to fend off the DomZ and to protect the population.

After an attack on the lighthouse base, Jade and Pey'j meet with the shady rooster, who gives them a mission on behalf of a certain Mister De Castellac. The two reporters have to deal with a large number of dangerous creatures before Hahn reveals to them that De Castellac never existed and instead lets them in on the secrets of the IRIS organization.

IRIS is a secret organization, which suspects a collaboration with the DomZ behind the machinations of the Alpha department. Hahn says that the Alpha Department itself kidnaps civilians and helps the hostile alien race, while at the same time gaining the trust of Hyllis residents. Jade is supposed to collect evidence of this conspiracy with the help of her camera.

In the IRIS underground, Jade meets Nino, Mei and Peepers, other members of IRIS. Then she and her uncle Pey'j go on a mission to an old factory, where the Alpha Department is based and where they transport their victims, before they are taken to the old slaughterhouses and finally to the moon in the hands of the DomZ to be brought. Jade is able to take some photos and also meets another IRIS agent named Double-H, who previously disappeared during a mission in the factory. Shortly afterwards, Pey'j is discovered, overwhelmed and abducted by some guards from the Alpha Department. Jade continues her mission together with Double-H and shoots more photos of evidence and goes on a search for her uncle. She penetrates deep into the underground of the factory and messes with a DomZ monster and guards from the Alpha department, but Pey'j is brought to the slaughterhouses before she can rush to his aid.

Back at the IRIS shelter, Hahn, Mei and Nino are very happy about the return of their old friend Double-H. Together with the warrior, Jade then goes to the slaughterhouses. Meanwhile, the population of Hyllis is slowly beginning to rebel in the face of overwhelming photos of evidence. In the slaughterhouses, Jade and Double-H take more photos, sneak past guards on patrol, and publish a new report that intensifies the rebellion. However, there is still no trace of Pey'j.

Back at IRIS, Jade meets the governor who secretly supports the secret organization. Then Jade finds out that none other than her uncle Pey'j is the boss of IRIS. Shortly thereafter, Jade's lighthouse is destroyed by the Alpha Division, with all orphans kidnapped and taken to the moon. Jade is about to give up when she finds an old spaceship in a secret cave that Pey'j had hidden there. With this, Jade and Double-H fly to the moon in order to be able to publish a third report on a local long-distance station and to make the rebellion so unstoppable.

Jade can photograph General Keck, who is talking to the Queen of the DomZ. A little later she also finds Uncle Pey'j, who is already dead. When Jade touches his corpse, however, he comes to life again through a previously hidden ability of Jade. The three of Jade, Pey'j and Double-H now set off.

You reach the station and publish the report on Hyllis, according to which the population can now finally no longer be stopped and the alpha department is defeated. General Keck tries to kill the three reporters with the help of a gigantic robot, but Jade can defeat him, Keck is fatally injured and dies in the control room of the machine. Last but not least, Jade faces the Queen of DomZ in a final battle and can defeat her too. Jade, her uncle and Double-H free all prisoners and they thank Jade, who rises in a glimmer of light. Pey'j and Double-H as well as Hahn, Mei and Nino, who now also arrive at the moon, witness it when Jade soars high into the air and smiles in the face of victory.

After the credits you can see Pey'j standing in the lighthouse. He tenses up when suddenly a DomZ-like ulcer spreads in his hand.

HD re-release

At the end of September 2010, Ubisoft announced an improved version of the game for digital distribution via the console networks Xbox Live and PlayStation Network with sales starting in 2011 as part of the "Ubisoft Digital Day". The improvements consist of revised textures and 3D models of the game characters as well as newly mixed sound and a total of 12 successes. It was released on Xbox Live on March 2, 2011 and on June 8, 2011 on PlayStation Network. This version contains a revised control and changed button assignment on the controller. If the player controls the hovercraft indoors, the camera can no longer be moved freely, which makes many of the tasks to be solved even more difficult.

Beyond Good & Evil 2

On May 28, 2008, a trailer for a successor was shown at a press conference in Paris. Developer Michel Ancel confirmed in April 2009 that he is working on the project. In October 2011, the failure to play was justified with technical requirements that were still too high. In early May 2012, Michel Ancel confirmed that Beyond Good & Evil 2 would be in development. But he explained again that the game will most likely only be released for the next generation of consoles. On October 6, 2016, Ubisoft officially confirmed that BG & E2 is in development. The game was presented with a trailer at E3 2017.
