Leon and the Magic Words is a 2009 Franco-Italian cartoon directed by Dominique Monféry .

action

6 year old Leon, his 10 year old sister Alina and their parents spend the summer in Kerity. Here they have inherited an old villa by the sea from their late aunt Éléonore. Leon in particular is hurt by the loss, but Eleanor always read to him, who has great problems with reading. The family greets their neighbor Adrian, who was Eleanor's best friend. In addition, Cleaner Dümpel appears at the house and offers Leon's father his services if he wants to clear the house.

Eleonor has left something for Leon and Alina separately: Alina receives a doll, while Leon is given the contents of the “secret room” that no one was allowed to enter. To Leon's disappointment, the room is full of books. The roof of the house is damaged in a storm. To pay for the repairs, Leon agrees to sell the books. Only then does he realize that the fairy tale characters in the books are coming to life, since the books are originals. The characters believe that Leon is "The Great Reader", whom Eleanor has chosen as their successor and who will protect the books and their characters. To do this, Leon needs to read a spell on the wall of books by 12 noon. Leon can't read the letters. The evil fairy therefore believes that he is not the chosen one and shrinks him to the size of a fairy tale. Shortly afterwards, Mr. Dümpel appears, packs all the books and transports them to his storage room. Leon and the fairy tale characters have also landed in the boxes. Only the evil fairy remained in the house with the only book in the collection, so that she cannot transform Leon back.

Leon decides to save the fairy tale world. While the other characters are supposed to prevent the books from being sold, he sets off for his house with Alice and the white rabbit, who is carrying a pocket watch. They are later joined by an ogre . The path turns out to be difficult, as it leads through the sand by the sea. After a few dangerous situations, Alina becomes aware of the four tiny creatures and brings them into the house. She alerts Adrian, who rushes to Dümpel and pretends to be interested in a book. Leon in turn manages at the last second to recite the spell that prevents all the fairy tale characters from disappearing. With the evil fairy, everyone secretly gets back to Dümpel's warehouse at the side of Leon's father. The evil fairy transforms Leon back to his original size because the ogre threatens to otherwise eat her. Now Leon can prevent the books from being sold and get his father to bring the books back to Aunt Eleonor's house. The renovation of the house is also possible, as Eleanor had hidden her precious jewelry in the doll she gave Alina, which can be sold. After saving the fairy tales, Leon and his sister go into the book room and all the characters appear and applaud Leon. Fairy tales continue to be told all over the world.

production

Leon and the Magic Words goes back to an original idea by Anik Le Ray , who brought a true story to the story: A three or four year old boy named Nathanaël confessed to her one day that he could not read, believing that reading was innate . Le Ray took the anecdote as an opportunity to send fairy tale characters, who had grown dear to her in her childhood, on a journey with the boy Leon (in the original Nathanaël ), which for him also marks the beginning of his reading skills.

Leon and the Magic Words was the third animated film directed by Dominique Monféry. The film was made as a cartoon, with the design of the characters going back to graphic designer and illustrator Rebecca Dautremer . Dautremer was inspired by her grandmother's house when designing the house and used her parents' library as inspiration for the film library.

Leon and the Magic Words had its premiere on October 22nd, 2009 at the Festival internazionale del film di Roma . It was released in French cinemas on December 16, 2009, where it was seen by around 573,000 people. In Germany it was released on DVD on February 10, 2011.

criticism

Télérama praised the graphic design as successful and described it as “a magic of lively colors” (“une magie de couleurs vives”). Also animationsfilme.ch found that Eleanor's Secret is a "visually stylish converted [r] character animation movie" but back reach into action on subjects known books and films, including Michael Ende's The Neverending Story and Henry Selick's Coraline .

For Das Erste , the film was an “ode to fantasy” and for Cinema “poetic fantasy for young and old”. n-tv called the film a "wonderful plea for the magic of reading and a wonderful family film."

Award

The German film and media rating awarded the film the title “particularly valuable”. At the Festival d'Animation Annecy in 2010 the film received an honorable mention from the jury and was nominated for a Cristal as best feature film.
