Course of the Bhima

The Bhima ( Marathi : भीमा , Kannada : ಭೀಮಾ Telugu : భీమా ; Bhīmā [ ˈbʱiːmaː ]) is an approximately 725 km long left tributary of the Krishna in the Indian states of Maharashtra , Karnataka and Telangana .

The Bhima is the main tributary of Krishna. Its source is in the Western Ghats around 100 kilometers as the crow flies northwest of Pune in Maharashtra. At its source is the Bhimashankar Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of Hinduism . From there it flows in a south-easterly direction through the highlands of Dekkan and flows through the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka. On its lower reaches it forms the border between Karnataka and Telangana for less than ten kilometers. 20 kilometers north of the city of Raichur , the Bhima flows into the Krishna.

In 1990, 12.33 million people lived in the Bhima catchment area. In the low-precipitation Dekkan, its water plays an important role in agriculture.
