The library of the Zurich University of Education provides employees, students and those taking part in further training with printed, electronic and multimedia media for teaching , studying , further training and research . The media for school lessons cover all grades of primary school up to upper secondary level .

history

After the Zurich University of Education was founded in 2002, the information center was initially set up by several thematically organized media libraries at various locations. In 2012 they were merged into the new campus , for the construction of which the Swiss architect Max Dudler was responsible - as well as for the interior design of the library rooms.

organization

The library extends over four floors (including the administration floor). Within the library, a distinction is made between three areas of responsibility: holdings, use, services.

There are over 150 workstations available in the library, as well as sofa corners, a learning lounge, lockable work rooms and a relaxation room with two loungers.

The inventory consists of specialist and study literature on pedagogy , teaching aids from the canton of Zurich and other cantons and countries , didactic aids, general non-fiction and specialist books, journals on school, educational and social science topics, audiovisual media and licensed databases. The inventory included 2019 among others around 85,000 printed copies, plus more than 70,000 licensed e-books and nearly 200 licensed e-journals in the research portal of the library (as of January 2020).

E-preferred strategy and open access

In its strategy for 2016–2020, the library is increasingly relying on electronic media and open access . Virtual bookshelves have served as playful research tools since mid-May 2018 by visualizing printed and digital media in three dimensions on a large touch screen . The institutional repository began regular operations in 2019 under the direction of the library. It contains scientific and application-related works by PHZH employees and makes them accessible in the sense of Open Access.

Special stocks

The library contains special collections such as learning environments, viewing and loan copies from the Central Office for Classroom Reading (ZKL) and teaching media from the National Competence and Service Center for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), éducation21.

cooperation

Together with around 140 other libraries from Switzerland , the library of the University of Education in Zurich is part of the NEBIS network , which lists around 10.5 million documents online in the joint library catalog .
