"Big Eye" Louis Nelson Delisle (* 28. January 1885 in New Orleans , Louisiana ; † 20th August 1949 ) was an American jazz - clarinetist of the New Orleans Jazz . He also played bass , banjo and accordion .

Live and act

Delisle studied clarinet with Lorenzo Tio senior (father of Lorenzo Tio ) and Luis Tio and played already with 15 years professionally in Storyville district of New Orleans. Around 1905 he was in the Imperial Orchestra, in 1907 in the Golden Rule Orchestra, in the Imperial Band with Manuel Perez and in 1912 in the Superior Orchestra. He also played in the Eagle Band and with Papa Celestin .

His early "hot" style of clarinet playing - although he often used a C clarinet in the beginning - influenced later New Orleans clarinetists such as Jimmie Noone and Johnny Dodds . In 1916/17 he toured with the "Original Creole Orchestra" (including Freddie Keppard ) in Boston and New York , but was later replaced by Jimmie Noone, after which he returned to New Orleans. He played in the Lyric Theater Orchestra in 1918 and repeatedly with John Robichaux from 1918 to 1924 . In 1925 he played with Willie Pajeaud and in the late 1920s with Sidney Desvigne . From 1939 to 1948 he had his own quartet in Luthjen's Bistro in New Orleans. The only surviving recordings are from the last years of his career in the late 1940s (1949). He also recorded with Kid Rena in 1940 .

He should not be confused with the trombonist of New Orleans Jazz Louis Nelson (1902–1990).

He also gave brief lessons to Sidney Bechet .

According to his own statements, he played with Buddy Bolden in Henry Peyton's orchestra during the Robert Charles Riot's in 1900 , but according to Samuel Charters this is uncertain.
