The Big Town Playboys are a six-member English rhythm and blues band dedicated to American rhythm and blues of the 1940s and 1950s (such as Amos Milburn and Louis Jordan ). It was founded in 1984 by Andy Silvester and Ricky Cool, from the original lineup today only Ian Jennings (bass) belongs to the group. Another founding member, Mike Sanchez (piano), left the band in 1999 to pursue his solo career. The band has a wide fan base all over Europe, especially in Scandinavia and Germany , where they are regularly invited to clubs and touring.

General

Your song selection refers to the music of the black America of the 1950s. The styles that they incorporate into their music also include rockabilly and swing. The infectious dance grooves, the boogie piano, the saxophone riffs and the plaintive blues of the singers are the reasons for the band's obsession with this style.

In addition to their band activities, they also played as a backing band for many blues greats, such as Lowell Fulson , Carey Bell , Lurrie Bell , Little Willie Littlefield , Champion Jack Dupree , Rosco Gordon and Jimmy Nelson .

Highlights

In 1991 they played the score for the film The Pope must die - A Pope to Kiss by Robbie Coltrane / Peter Richardson together with Jeff Beck . In 1996 the band played with Eric Clapton , who is an admirer of their music, on his European tour, including 21 appearances at the Royal Albert Hall . In the same year the band contributed to the soundtrack of the film The Color of Money with Tom Cruise and Paul Newman (It's my life Baby) - but they are not featured on the soundtrack . Highlights also included three trips to the United States, where they toured the West Coast, performed at Mick Fleetwood’s Los Angeles Club and appeared on a coast-to-coast television show in New York City . In 2004 they released the album Roll The Dice to celebrate their 20th anniversary as a band. Her friends Robert Plant , Jeff Beck, Andy Fairweather - Low and Jools Holland can be heard as guest musicians on the album . In May 2005 they played two charity concerts in India with Gary Brooker and Andy Fairweather-Low, the proceeds of which benefited the December 2004 tsunami victims, one in Delhi and the other in Chennai (Madras). There were also performances by the Playboys for Prince Charles and Lady Diana , they played at Jools Hoolands and Tommy Hilflinger's birthday party and the wedding of Robert Cray and the daughter of Robert Plant.
