The Education and Advice Center for the Hearing Impaired Stegen ( BBZ Stegen ) is a state special education and advice center with a boarding school with a focus on hearing. The school, which is sponsored by the state of Baden-Württemberg, has a boarding school in which more than half of the students live and live during the week. The BBZ Stegen also has a school kindergarten with three groups that also accept children with good hearing. A total of over 300 students attend the school, which is divided into a primary school, a technical secondary school , a secondary school with an orientation level and a grammar school. The school offers the hearing impaired better conditions than integration into the general school : a maximum of 10 pupils study in sound-optimized rooms equipped with intercom systems.

In addition to the boarding school, a day grant (Tafö) is offered; this is where the students who live outside and who travel daily are looked after after class. Every week, educators organize numerous supplementary educational offers (UEFA) in which children and young people can take part. The activities on offer include football, basketball, model making, kayaking, cooking groups, Nordic walking, and much more at the BBZ Stegen has its own cafeteria where all meals are prepared. The BBZ Stegen also has a school psychology service and an infirmary . Since the 2014/15 school year, well-hearing pupils have also been admitted to the BBZ (percentage).

The education and counseling center includes counseling centers in Stegen , Singen and Maulburg with educational audiology , hearing and language tests, diagnostic procedures to determine the level of development and comprehensive parenting advice on all issues relating to the hearing impairment of their child.

Early childhood education

The early childhood education includes offerings for families with hearing-impaired children from 0 to 6 years: playful dialogue promotion of the child, diagnosis, counseling of parents and day-care facilities as well as working in an interdisciplinary network. Early childhood education works close to home and also offers home visits. Parent-child groups in Stegen, Singen, Weil am Rhein and Offenburg complete the early childhood education program.

Specialized educational advice for hearing-impaired pupils in general schools is of particular importance as part of the supportive care provided by the special education service. This includes teacher and parent counseling, teaching support at the general school with didactic and methodical recommendations, advice on classroom design and school career advice at educational path conferences .

In the context of inclusive schooling be for many years at various outdoor locations students with hearing disabilities in public schools by hearing impaired teachers in team teaching taught by a teacher of the public school.

This means that the BBZ Stegen is one of the first special education and advice centers that has implemented an outdoor class model in Baden-Württemberg and thus realizes schooling as close to home as possible for pupils with hearing impairments in the entire southern Baden region.

School kindergarten

The school kindergarten is attended by hearing-impaired / speech-impaired children as well as children with no special needs from the age of three. The group size of max. 10 - 12 children enable individual and intensive work with all children. Children without special needs can be admitted to the kindergarten through a cooperation with Caritas Hochschwarzwald.

Children with and without special needs play and learn together right from the start.

The main focus is on communication. The first thing in the morning is the hearing aid check. The participation of all children have the daily interaction must be secured, using different forms of communication come into play: spoken language , loud talking supportive gestures and German Sign Language .

A clearly structured and visualized daily and weekly routine with recurring rituals gives every child support and security. For every child, an emotional constant is that they belong to the group. Regular exchange with parents about experiences and developmental steps at home and in kindergarten is important for kindergarten.

Regular cooperation with the senior citizens' residential complex fPater Middendorf in Stegen, the first class of the BBZ Stegen and the local kindergarten are part of everyday educational life.

primary school

The pedagogical starting point for the school work in the primary school lies in the individual abilities and skills of the children. The tailor-made offers lead to an increase in knowledge and education and thus enable increased activity and participation.

The primary school at BBZ Stegen currently consists of four cross-year classes. In two entry level classes, teaching is bimodal / bilingual. Both spoken language and German sign language have equal rights as a form of communication in the classroom. A statutory 5th year of primary school is possible to lay the foundations for later learning. The basic principles of Maria Montessori are also used here .

In the two advanced classes 3–4, a further focus is the use of new media, which provide barrier-free access to information for students with hearing impairments. Whiteboards and tablets are part of everyday learning.

The use of hearing technology is a central topic in all classes. Only when the cochlear implants , hearing aids and FM systems are mastered by the children will they continue to use them in their later life.

Cooperation with the local general schools is firmly anchored in the concept of the elementary school and has been a tradition for years.

Werkrealschule

In the Werkrealschule , students who are oriented towards spoken and sign language learn in common classes. The pupils in the special needs school (specialization learning) are mainly taught in separate classes.

In addition to school-based learning and the development of communication, the special focus of support in the Werkrealschule / Förderschule department is dealing with hearing impairment and in-depth professional orientation.

The film works of the students were awarded the Federal Student Film Prize in 2013. And the project “School (ge) created” for career orientation was honored with a nationwide award.

The overwhelming majority of students graduate from school with a secondary school certificate or a special school certificate. Only a few still attend class 10 of the Werkrealschule, which is offered in cooperation with the Werkrealschule Dreisamtal.

secondary school

The secondary school in the BBZ Stegen is attended by students with hearing impairments who are predominantly taught in spoken language.

In a common orientation level for grade 5, since the school year 2016/17, students in the Werkrealschule and Realschule have been placed in joint classes. Since the 2017/18 school year this also includes grade 6.

The students of the Realschule are supported in their individual learning in the entrance classes by working independently in learning rooms. Occasionally, pupils receive additional special education lessons in order to develop further in the linguistic area.

Through two internships, attending information events, application training as part of the job looping project in the Europa Park of Paulinenpflege Winnenden , advisory services and intensive cooperation with the employment agency, the students are prepared for professional life.

Almost all students successfully complete school with a secondary school certificate.

Course offer

The BBZ high school is attended by almost 100 hearing-impaired students. It offers the 9-year course up to the Abitur. After the orientation level (grades 5 and 6) or the secondary school leaving certificate, students have the opportunity to switch from general schools to the BBZ. After the secondary school leaving certificate, an additional year of preparation is offered in order to facilitate the transition to grammar school and to be able to meet the requirements of the Abitur for a second foreign language over a period of four years.

In middle school there are regular student encounters with a partner school in France. In grade 11, a student exchange to the USA is offered every two years as part of the German American Partnership Program (GAPP). The collaboration with the North Carolina School of the Deaf and a high school in Lenoir (NC) has proven itself over the years.

New for the 2016/17 school year is sign language-supported lessons in grade 7, so that deaf students with the appropriate grammar school skills can also be offered lessons. 80% of the lessons in this class are occupied by both specialist teachers from the grammar school and special educators who are competent in sign language. In addition, there is special media support through which an improved visualization of the lesson content is achieved. The grammar school is currently cooperating with the St. Sebastian College, which is also located in Stegen, in the upper level in the subjects of fine arts, geography, history and literature and theater, so that a wide range of courses can be offered at the course level.

Boarding school

During the week, the school's boarding school accommodates students who live further away. In 19 different groups, girls and boys aged 4–22 live together in age-homogeneous groups. The students in the individual groups are looked after by two educators who are responsible for the students outside of school hours.

The more than 45 educators offer over 20 different working groups and leisure activities in the evenings and afternoons during the school weeks, in which the students can participate. In addition to meaningful leisure activities, the goal is to interact with other children and young people as well as exchange and numerous collaborations with associations and institutions outside the BBZ Stegen.

The day support currently looks after around 100 pupils from grades 1 to 10 who live near the BBZ Stegen and can go home every day. Here, in eight different groups, children and young people are supported with their homework and accompanied in various leisure activities. There are currently 15 teachers and interns working in the daily support.
