The Chen formula
Chen is the inventor of the Chen Formula, which was published in Lou Krieger's book Hold'em Excellence in 2000 . The formula is used to assign numerical values to the cards in the starting hand and thus to define their strength before the flop. The calculated value is set in relation to the otherwise available sheets. Only the higher of the two cards is used to determine the points. The lower one is only required for the additional calculation of gaps and suited cards ("cards of the same color").
- Ace = 10 points
- King = 8 points
- Queen = 7 points
- Jack = 6 points
- 10 to 2 = half of the value (e.g. 10 = 5; 7 = 3.5)
- A pair in hand: Multiply the number of points by 2 (e.g. two aces = 20), but at least 5 points (i.e. pairs of 2, 3, 4 and 5 are worth 5 points)
- Suited cards (cards of the same color): 2 points in addition to the points of the higher card
- Connectors (2 consecutive cards, such as 9 and 10 or Queen and King): 1 additional point
- 1 gap (e.g. 8 and 10 or jack and king): subtract 1 point
- 2-gap (e.g. 8 and jack or jack and ace): subtract 2 points
- 3 gap (e.g. 8 and queen or 2 and 6): subtract 4 points
- 4-space (or larger space): subtract 5 points
