William James "Bill" O'Brien (born October 23, 1969 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American football coach. He is currently Head Coach and General Manager of the Houston Texans in the NFL . Before that, he was the head coach of Pennsylvania State University and was active as an assistant coach at various clubs.

Career

After high school, O'Brien studied at Brown University , where he also played as a defensive end and linebacker from 1990 to 1992 for their football team. He never made the leap to a professional team and then became an assistant coach at Brown University after graduating in 1993. This was followed by positions at Georgia Tech , the University of Maryland and Duke University .

In 2007, O'Brien was first assistant coach of a team in the NFL . He initially held the position of an offensive assistant to the New England Patriots . Under coach Bill Belichick he was promoted to coach of the wide receiver and then to coach of the quarterbacks in the following years. After Jeff O'Daniels left the team in 2011, he was eventually appointed offensive coordinator . In the season the Patriots reached the Super Bowl , but were subject to the New York Giants .

O'Brien got his first job as a head coach in 2012 when he became a coach at Pennsylvania State University . Despite an abuse scandal at the university and the resulting sanctions, he was able to successfully end the season with 8 wins to 4 losses. He received several awards, including Paul "Bear" Bryant Trainer of the Year. Also in his second season they achieved more wins than losses.

After his successful stint at Penn State, O'Brien became head coach of the Houston Texans in the NFL in 2014 . After the Texans narrowly missed the playoffs in his first season despite 9 wins to 7 defeats , they were able to reach them in O'Brien's second year. However, the Texans failed in the wild card round to the Kansas City Chiefs . Under O'Brien, the Texans have won the AFC South Division four times and entered the playoffs, but failed each time at the latest in the Divisional Round, most recently in 2019 at the eventual Super Bowl winner Kansas City Chiefs. Since January 28, 2020, he has also been their general manager.
