William Edwin Barnes (born May 20, 1879 in London , † 1962 ) was an English football player and coach .

After his active career, during which he worked as a striker a. a. played for Sheffield United , West Ham United and the Queens Park Rangers and won the FA Cup in 1902 , Barnes was successful in Spain as coach of Athletic Bilbao .

Career

As a player

Barnes was born in London in May 1879. His father was a dock worker and his mother ran a coffee shop. His brother, Alfred Barnes, was a politician of the Labor Party and Prime Minister Clement Attlee worked from 1945 to 1951 as a British transport minister.

Barnes' football career began at Thames Ironworks , the predecessor club to West Ham United. In 1896, at the age of 17, he scored the winning goal in the final of the West Ham Charity Cup . In 1899 he moved to Sheffield United . There players like Willie Foulke and Alf Common were among his teammates. In 1902 he moved with the club into the final of the FA Cup and won it against Southampton FC . He scored in the replay - the first match ended 1: 1 - the decisive 2: 1 winner. Barnes then played two years for West Ham United and three years alongside Robert Hawkes for Luton Town in the Southern Football League . In 1907 he was hired by the Queens Park Rangers . In the Rangers he won the Southern Football League with teammates like Fred Pentland in 1908 and 1912 and then took part in the finals for the FA Charity Shield , which were lost to Manchester United and the Blackburn Rovers . In 1913 he left the club after 234 competitive games and played for Southend United from then on .

As a trainer

In 1914 Barnes went to Spain and became the coach of Athletic Bilbao . Club coaches were still a rarity in Spain at the time. In Bilbao the training to 1910 was the captain led the team. In 1911, an Englishman named Shepherd was hired for the first time, but he only held office for a month. On the club side of Athletic Bilbao, Barnes was named as the club's first real coach. Barnes introduced the Basques in a Scottish style of play with long balls and frequent wing changes. With players like Pichichi he then won the Copa del Rey and the Basque regional championship in 1915 and 1916 . In 1916, Barnes had to leave the club abruptly: he was drafted into the British Army to serve in the First World War . Athletic then decided not to hire a new coach. After the war Barnes returned to Bilbao and took over the vacant coaching post in 1920. At the end of the season he won the Copa del Rey and the Basque regional championship again with Athletic. After completing his one-year contract, he left the club. During his three years in Bilbao, he had won every title there was to be won.
