William "Billy" Butler (born December 15, 1925 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † March 20, 1991 in Teaneck , New Jersey ) was an American guitarist of rhythm and blues and soul jazz .

Billy Butler began his career in 1947 in the backing band of a vocal group, The Harlemaires , after which he led his own formations from 1949 to 1952. In the 1950s he worked with Harry "Doc" Bagby (1953) and Bill Doggett (1954-1961), with whom he composed his biggest R&B hit in 1956, " Honky Tonk ".

In the 1960s he was a studio musician a. a. worked for King Curtis (1961/62), Dinah Washington , Panama Francis (1963), Johnny Hodges (1965), Jimmy Smith (1966) and David "Fathead" Newman (1968). From 1968 to 1970 Butler also recorded a number of albums for Prestige Records . During this time he played in Broadway show bands and in 1969/71 for Houston Person . In 1972 he worked on Chuck Rainey's debut album; from 1976 he toured Europe frequently.

Throughout his career, Butler worked even when shooting from Al Casey , Gene Ammons , Eddie Lockjaw Davis , Frank Foster , Herbie Hancock , Groove Holmes , Freddie Hubbard , Illinois Jacquet , Roland Kirk , Dave Pike , Sammy Price , Jimmy Scott and Sonny Stitt with .
