The Bilstein Marathon is an ultramarathon that has been held annually since 2011 through the Kaufunger Forest with start and finish in Kleinalmerode . The running routes of his three competitions are in Hesse and Lower Saxony . The running event is named after the second highest mountain of the low mountain range Kaufunger Wald, the Bilstein ( 641.2 m above sea level ). In 2016, the Bilstein Marathon hosted the German Ultratrail Championships .
history
The Bilstein Marathon was first held in 2011. The motto of the ultramarathon is flat is different! . In 2016, the German Ultratrail Championships were integrated into the running event, with the number of participants often fully booked early , for which the ultra trail was also extended. Despite the maximum number of participants, the Bilstein Marathon, with over 100 runners in the ultra competition, ranks in twentieth place among the most popular ultra trails in Germany. In the year of the DM in 2016, the event was the eighth largest ultra run in a national comparison.

Routes
The start and finish of all competitions are in Kleinalmerode ( 253 m ), a district of Witzenhausen . The marathon and ultramarathon first run on the Rodeberg (approx. 320 m ) to the Hermannseiche standing next to a crossroads at 297.5 m above sea level, circle this mountain and the Schäferberg (approx. 280 m ) before you pass the Kleinalmerode half marathon hunger Berg ( 423.1 m ) up to between Nieste and Kleinalmerode at the major road located 563 pass Umschwang ( 446 m lead). Via the Hausfirstbornstraße forest path, which is also used to mark the Frau-Holle-path , runners get to Bilstein ( 641.2 m ), partly with loops around the mountains Schwarzenberg (approx. 560 m ), Giesenberg ( 526.8 m ) and Steinberg ( 588.75 m ) as well as past the source of the Rote Nieste . From the Bilstein Tower, where the runners are traditionally greeted with music from a marching band , the half marathon route leads over the Bielsteinweg past the Mühlenstein ( 607.2 m ) and Klippstädt (approx. 350 m ) mountains back to Kleinalmerode, during the marathon and ultra trail over the Great Cap ( 572.5 m ) and its northern foothills, the Kleine Cap ( 463.5 m ), as well as circling the Wolfsberg (approx. 355 m ) past Roßbach ( 241 m ) and then back to Kleinalmerode.
