Binjamin Wolf Segel (also Benjamin Segel , born July 20, 1866 in Łopuszna , Rohatyn district , Austria-Hungary ; † March 9, 1931 in Piešťany , Czechoslovakia ) was a Galician author, journalist and ethnologist.

Life

Segel had a traditional Jewish education and studied natural science, art history and philosophy at the universities in Lemberg , Vienna and Berlin . He then worked for the magazine " Ost und West ", which appeared in Berlin from 1901, and for which he wrote most of the articles under various pseudonyms. His series of articles “The misery of the Jews in Galicia”, “The War as a Teacher”, “The Polish Jewish Question”, “On the Day of Judgment” and “The Philosophy of the Pogrom” achieved particular fame (the last three were also published as books). He also published in the periodicals " Im deutscher Reich ", "Der Morgen", " Der Israelit " and the " CV-Zeitung ". With his multilingual publications, which are not only available in German, but also in Hebrew, Yiddish and Polish and also dealt with particularly ethnological issues, he attempted to bridge the gap between "Eastern Jews" and "Western Jews" in the form of a "Jewish nation" to bridge. To this end, Segel took on both secular elements of the Enlightenment , at the same time he valued traditional Jewish values. Among other things with his work “The journey of discovery of Dr. Theodor Lessing zu den Ostjuden ”(1910) he opposed an undifferentiated, discriminatory description of the“ Eastern Jews ”as represented by Theodor Lessing in the form of a series of articles in the“ Allgemeine Zeitung des Judentums ”. As a protagonist of liberal Judaism, he dealt critically with Ernst Lissauer's "Hateful Song against England". Critically examined with his publication “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Eine Erledigung ”(1924), he undertook one of the first critical appraisals of this forgery ; the anti-Semitism he fought with the magazine "World War. World revolution. World conspiracy. World Upper Government ”(1926). After living in Berlin for a long time, he spent the last years of his life in Vienna, marked by illness.
