history

The place name Birkigt is of German origin and means birch forest (analogous to Tännicht, Eichigt, Erlicht etc.). According to the Birkigte Chronicle, the place is said to have been mentioned as a birch heather as early as 1071. However, it is only documented in an interest statement by the knight Jan von Kochberg in 1380 as Pyrkich, then in 1647 under the name Birkig and has been called Birkigt since 1859. The manorial center was the manor, which belonged to the von Holleben family in the 16th century and which came to the barons of Gleichen-Rußwurm in 1738. In the middle of the 19th century there were six full and five half farms in addition to the manor.

At the edge of the forest in Birkigt, 15 concentration camp prisoners were tied up with ropes and shot in the neck by SS men . These dead, probably from a concentration camp death march , were later reburied in the Saalfeld cemetery. The memorial plaque that was erected at the murder site was removed after 1990.

On February 1, 2006, Birkigt was incorporated into Unterwellenborn.
