history

The village of Bischwind first appeared as "Biscofes-Winiden". The settlement probably goes back to a Slavic foundation, the so-called Wends first inhabited the village. They were subordinate to the bishop and were therefore called "turning the bishop". Originally there was a castle on the site of today's church, which was inhabited by the ministerials of the Lords of Bischofswinden. Under Emperor Heinrich VI. was Sigelohus d. J. († 1195) von Bischofswinden Chancellor.

In 1762 Bischwind was hit by a cattle disease. In the course of this catastrophe, the village population accepted St. Wendelin as their patron. In 1806 the population suffered from the French. During the coalition wars, Napoleonic horsemen were billeted in the village, the population protested and violent clashes broke out. Today Bischwind is a part of the community Dingolshausen.

Culture and sights

The Catholic parish church of St. Wendelin forms the center of the village. Its oldest part dates from the time of the Würzburg prince-bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn , the 17th century. The other elements are from 1821. The interior is dominated by the high altar from 1780 with the depiction of the church patron. The side altars came into the church in 1700. A ceiling painting in the Nazarene style is from 1899.

Another place of worship is the pilgrimage church of St. Maria, the Christian helper in the west of the village. The church was built between 1874 and 1875 in the neo-Gothic style . The oldest equipment element is a rococo figure of the Queen of Heaven. The pilgrimage to Bischwind was established by Johann Georg Mittnacht, who was miraculously saved from captivity as a soldier in the Turkish wars . The previous building was built in 1708.

The corridor around the village has several wayside shrines and small memorials. The oldest of these sticks dates from 1630, and two more tortures were built in the 18th century.
