The Roman Catholic Diocese of Aliwal ( lat. Dioecesis Alivalensis , Engl. Diocese of Aliwal ) is in South Africa situated Roman Catholic diocese based in Aliwal North .

history

The diocese Aliwal was on June 12, 1923 by Pope Pius XI. Erected from the cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate Cape of Good Hope as the Apostolic Prefecture Gariep . On January 27, 1936 the Apostolic Prefecture Gariep was by Pius XI. Elevated to the Apostolic Vicariate and renamed the Apostolic Vicariate Aliwal . The Apostolic Vicariate Aliwal gave on January 11, 1951 parts of its territory to establish the Archdiocese of Bloemfontein .

The Apostolic Vicariate Aliwal was on January 11, 1951 by Pope Pius XII. raised to the diocese and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Cape Town as a suffragan . On March 24, 1953, the Diocese of Aliwal gave up parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Prefecture De Aar .
