The Diocese of Danlí was established on January 2, 2017 by Pope Francis from cession of territory to the Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa and subordinated to it as a suffragan diocese. The first bishop was José Antonio Canales Motiño .
The Diocese of Danlí includes the Department of El Paraíso .
