The Diocese of Hamilton in New Zealand was established on March 6, 1980 from the Diocese of Auckland . The former counties of Raglan County , Waipa County , Otorohanga County , Taumarunui County , Otinemuri County , Piako County , Matamata County , Tauranga County , Rotorua County , Taupo County , Opotiki County , Waiapu County , Waikohu County and Cook County as well as parts of it were named as area assigned by Waikato County .

The diocese is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Wellington.
