Blue Affenthaler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Blaue Affenthaler is a red wine variety . It is a German variety that used to be grown frequently in Württemberg and there in particular on the lower and middle Neckar and in the Enz and Remstal valleys. After the Second World War , the variety fell into oblivion due to its sour wines and the abandonment of the mixed set , until 2 intact vines were rediscovered in Kaisersbach and Steinheim an der Murr in 2004 . Andreas Jung pointed out a connection between the Affenthaler and the variety known as Schwarzer Österreicher in the Franconian growing area .

The blue Affenthaler is not related to the blue Arbst , despite a similar synonym . In the 19th century, however, both varieties were often confused in the Württemberg growing area and were probably found together in the vineyards (→ mixed sentence ).

Parentage: unclear, old variety. There seems to be a relationship to the Heunisch family .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is light green and hairy with medium to white wool. The young leaves are hairy and of a yellowish color.
  • The medium-sized leaves are rounded, five-lobed and medium-thick. The stem bay is narrow, open to closed. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are medium wide compared to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is blistered and rough.
  • The mostly cylindrical to cone-shaped grape is medium-sized and very dense to compact. The round berries are small and blue-black in color.

The grapes ripen from the beginning to the middle of October, physiologically about a week later than those of the Gutedel and thus a little later than the Pinot Noir . The Blue Affenthaler is therefore considered to ripen early.

Synonyms
