In the fields of theater, painting, music, literature, photography and mask making and play, people with physical, mental or psychological peculiarities meet in their free time to work equally and continuously artistically. The focus of the artistic work is the individual person with their individual abilities. The question of whether artists or actors have a disability or are experienced in psychiatry does not arise. People are not perceived in deficit, but with their possibilities. The atmosphere in the courses is characterized by respect for the special features of the individual. The aim of the work in the continuously offered courses is the public presentation of the results of the artistic projects in the form of performances, concerts, exhibitions and readings.

history

The first artistic leisure activities for people who were previously psychiatric came into being in 1986 with the dissolution of the long-term psychiatry monastery Blankenburg . Since then, people with and without disabilities or psychiatric experience have met in a studio building in the Walle district of Bremen in order to work together artistically in the fields of theater, mask making and play, music, literature and the visual arts. In 2005, the range of courses was expanded to include analog photography and a writing workshop. Blaumeier has grown piece by piece over time. In 1992/93 the old studio building was renovated, increasing the available space. In 2007 the completion of a new building complex was celebrated, with which the studio area has doubled.

The theater sector founded a permanent ensemble: 15 actors take part in the long-term, professional theater work. a. the opera “Carmen”, the musically framed play “Around the World in 80 Days”, an adaptation of the ancient tragedy of “Orpheus and Eurydice” and, most recently, Shakespeare's classic “Storm” on stage. And the painting area also experienced constant expansion and professionalization.

Productions and projects

The Blaumeier-Atelier and its artists have received many awards over the years and enjoy a high reputation; the sweet women , one of the theater groups were, for example, invited to South Africa and the painting group presented images among others in 1998 and 2003 at the Consulate General in New York. The exhibition “Of Ports, Ships and Much Sea”, created in the painting area, was shown in the program of the German-Latvian cultural days O! VACIJA in Riga. The film Crazy About Paris , which came out in cinemas in 2002, was able to make the Blaumeier studio more widely known across the region. The mask area organized the “Free Night of Masks” six times. In an artistically designed park, up to 300 mask players from all over Germany enchanted up to 7,000 spectators each.

In both 2015 and 2017, the Blaumeier Atelier was co-organizer of the large, international theater festival “Mittenmang” in the Bremen Theater. International theater groups are guests here, with their productions representing different, sometimes provocative standpoints on the subject of inclusion and social interaction.
