Clarence Henry Reid (born February 14, 1939 in Vienna , Georgia , † January 17, 2016 in Lauderdale Lakes , Florida ) was an American musician, rapper , songwriter and producer , also known under the stage name Blowfly .

biography

During the 1960s and 1970s, Reid worked as a songwriter and producer for artists including Betty Wright , Sam & Dave , Gwen McCrae , Jimmy "Bo" Horne, Bobby Byrd and KC and the Sunshine Band . During this time he also recorded his own songs, such as Nobody But You Babe (1969).

For fun he wrote vulgar versions of well-known hits, which he initially only performed in private. In 1971 he recorded an entire album of such songs with studio musicians under the pseudonym "Blowfly". The album, The Weird World of Blowfly , features Reid as a masked superhero on the cover . With this alter ego he started a parallel career and recorded other albums that were successful as party blasters. The offensive version of his song Rapp Dirty ( aka Blowfly's Rapp ) helped Blowfly's Party hit # 26 on the Billboard Black Albums chart in 1980 and # 82 on the Billboard 200 .

His pasties also caused legal trouble for Reid, while his own songs have been widely sampled by hip-hop , R&B and electro artists , including Beyonce, Wu Tang Clan, DJ Quik, DMX, Method Man & Redman, Main Source, DJ Shadow, Eazy-E, RJD2, Jurassic 5, Big Daddy Kane, Mary J. Blige, Brand Nubian and The Avalanches without getting paid accordingly.

Even after the turn of the millennium, Blowfly was successful. He performed worldwide. In 2008 he was on tour with the doctors in Germany .

Clarence Reid died on January 17, 2016 at the age of 76 from complications from liver cancer .
