About the New River, Kanawha River and Ohio River , the river is part of the catchment area of the Mississippi River . A 18 km section of the lower reaches is designated as the Bluestone National Scenic River .

Run

The Bluestone River rises on East River Mountain in Tazewell County , Virginia, and follows a generally northeastern direction through Counties Mercer and Summers , West Virginia. The river passes the cities of Bluefield in Virginia and Bramwell and Montcalm in West Virginia. The river flows into Bluestone Lake about 6.5 km south of Hinton , which is formed by a dam of the United States Army Corps of Engineers New River. Most of the section of the river classified as the National Scenic River is located in Summers County, as is Pipestem Resort State Park , which extends down a canyon the river has cut into the landscape.

pollution

The Bluestone River suffers from contamination with PCBs , largely a result of earlier coal mining in the Appalachian Mountains . As a result, Virginia recommended not to consume carp caught above Bluefield , Virginia . West Virginia, on the other hand, recommends limiting to one meal per month.

In Virginia, the Department of Environmental Quality also warns against swimming in the river or coming into direct contact with the water in any other way because of high levels of fecal coliform bacteria .

Little Bluestone River

The Little Bluestone River is a tributary of the Bluestone River in Summers County; it is less than 9 miles from its formation by the White Oak Branch and Jumping Branch to its confluence with the Bluestone River.
