Bluff is a census-designated place in San Juan County in the US state of Utah .
history
Directed by John Taylor (1808–1887), third President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ( Mormons ), Silas Sanford Smith (a cousin of the Church's founder, Joseph Smith ) led approximately 230 Church members into the Southeast Utah Territory to start a new settlement there. In April 1880 they reached the Bluff area where they settled.
In the 1930s, the number of residents of Bluff had fallen to around 70, then rose again temporarily in the 1950s due to the increased search for uranium . When the uranium boom subsided in the 1970s, the population also fell again. Today between 250 and 300 people live in Bluff.
