Bo Inge Andersson (born October 16, 1955 in Falkenberg , Sweden ) is a Swedish manager who worked for General Motors , GAZ and AwtoWAS . The former Swedish officer, businessman and diplomat was the first non-Russian president of AVTOVAZ, the largest Russian car manufacturer, from late 2013 to 2016.

Life

Bo Andersson grew up in the south of Sweden. After graduating from the Swedish Military Academy, he did his military service. He left the army with the rank of major. Bo Andersson holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Stockholm University and a degree from Harvard University's senior management program .

General Motors

Bo Andersson began his career in 1987 as a manager for purchasing at SAAB Automotive AB , where he was appointed vice president of SAAB for purchasing in 1990. In 1993, he moved to Detroit , where he served as an Executive Director for Electrical Components Purchasing at General Motors . A year later, he was appointed Executive Director of Chemicals Purchasing at General Motors and served in that position for three years. In 1997 Bo Andersson went to Germany to work in the position of Vice President for Purchasing in Europe. In 2001 Bo Andersson rose to the top management and was responsible as Vice President for Global Purchasing at General Motors (GM until 2007) and then as Vice President for Global Purchasing and Supply Chain (until 2009).

In June 2009 Andersson left General Motors and became an advisor to Oleg Deripaska (Russian industrial tycoon), at the same time he took over the management of the Board of Directors of the GAZ Group - one of the oldest automobile plants in Russia and one of the largest manufacturers of commercial vehicles, buses and trucks.

GAZ group

On August 7, 2009, Andersson was appointed President of the GAZ Group . In this position, he should combine the development of the company's strategies with ongoing business operations. The main goal was to restore the company to profitability. In the course of his 5 years at GAZ, Andersson has managed to lead the business out of losses of USD 1 billion to a consistent EBIT profit: 7.6% (2010), 8.8% (2011 ), 10.3% (2012). The pure earnings in Russian currency changed from a loss of 30.5 billion in 2008 to a net profit of 8.8 billion in 2012. These results are due to the consistent reforms of Andersson in the GAZ group:

• the company cut around 50,000 people in the personnel area.
• Ineffective production facilities, including the production lines for the classic Gas Volga passenger car and other special vehicles, were dismantled, and the focus was on three main products (instead of 7 in 2009).
• A profit-sharing program was started for all employees and a zero-tolerance policy for corruption was established.
• much of the production range has been redesigned, including a new platform for commercial vehicles - for the first time in 20 years.
• the production of Volkswagen / Škoda , GM and Daimler was localized on the capacity areas of GAZ.

AwtoWAS

On November 5, 2013, Bo Andersson was appointed President of AwtoWAS - one of the largest automobile manufacturers in the world, which built obsolete Lada-branded cars and which had lost large market shares. The top Swedish manager became the first foreign president in the company's history. His task in this new role was to revive the Lada brand.

One of the biggest challenges for Bo Andersson as President of AwtoWAS was modernizing the company's production line and increasing the brand's appeal. In the first two years of his business activity as President of AwtoWAS, the company began producing 14 new vehicles: six new Lada cars and eight new vehicles for Alliance Renault - Nissan . As with the GAZ Group , Bo Andersson has restructured the company's operations. This process included:

• Optimization of management processes by reducing the management levels from 9 to 5.
• Standardization of workplaces to increase efficiency.
• Optimization of the number of employees in the company by reducing it by 37% (from 77 thousand employees to 44.4 thousand employees). In detail: The number of office employees by 44% (from 16 thousand employees to 8.9 thousand employees) the number of workers in production by 35% (from 54.1 thousand employees to 35.4 thousand employees) .
• Business restructuring, including the sale or removal of ineffective subsidiaries and restructuring of the B2B supply system.
• Change of corporate style, including the introduction of a new brand logo Lada.

By producing the Alliance products on the same production areas on which traditional Lada vehicles are built, AwtoWAS has been able to prove to its customers that the quality of its products meets high international standards.

In 2015 AwtoWAS started the production of two completely newly developed vehicle types, Lada Vesta (in Izhevsk ) and Lada X-Ray (in Tolyatti ), in two different production facilities: these two vehicles have been the first really new models for a long time. The new models are very successful. According to data for January 2016, the Lada Vesta was one of the top 10 best-selling vehicles on the Russian market just two months after it went on sale and ranks ahead of competitors such as B. the Škoda Rapid . For the first time in the history of the Lada brand, this new model received the best possible crash test rating from Autoreview (4 stars ARCAP). The Lada Vesta has thus joined the pool of the safest vehicles on the Russian market.

In 2015, Vedomosti's Russian daily business newspaper nominated Bo Andersson as “Person of the Year 2015” for his success in “transforming a giant state-owned factory into a normal plant that builds normal vehicles”. Nevertheless, Andersson was ousted from office by the Russian side in 2016.
